I'm going to go with GSDs - I've seen/heard of them being used for all sorts.  my boss's dogs have been trained to track, and I know of a young male who's currently in training for working trials; in the US they are used as military dogs (covering protection work, tracking and detection); and here in my home town there is a Guide Dog volunteer who raises GSDs to be guide dogs, very successfully too.  He's only had one fail - and that's because the poor dog went blind himself.  I've also seen GSDs on TV being used to herd sheep (their original function, I believe), and of course the bog standard guard dog (not that there is such a thing!).

Dobes make good all round dogs too (biased here too!), although I know if I trained mine to do tracking he wouldn't do it in bad weather!!

Do you mean one breed that is the most versatile? IMO, there is no definitive answer to that.

My breed are predominantly a herding breed but I wouldn't expect them to excel at retrieving (mouths aren't soft enough) I couldn't see them flushing out vermin (I now have a very strange picture in my mind )
But they would be good at search and rescue and Police work as they are often used in this area in other Countries.

LOL Gwen Barrington used to use her GSD as retrievers on her shoots her other breed was Irish Water Spainels. Her GSDs used to shepherd her sheep/cattle as well

BC's are quite versatile too There was a blind guy in London who had a privately trained guide dog(GBA only offered him a Labrador or Golden x Lab because of where he lived-I saw the letter he got from the GBA). He was a marathon runner & a lab or lab x wouldn't have been suitable for him on his training runs with his club. He used to go on walking/running holidays too. BC's have been trained to do a multitude of jobs from sheepwork to SARDA, epilepsy alert to drugs dogs as well as all the KC activities. I know one bird reserve warden that uses his to "toll"the ducks(yes it's a dark gold sable BC) & to help with bird rescue as it's less stressful on the wildfowl & one of his bitches raised some orphan ducklings

There was an old shepherd who when he retired & after he had a stroke his young dog taught himself to go shopping into the village & would fetch help/neighbours when needed.  It started when the old man needed some shopping & left the note out for his grandson who was late & who used to take the dog down to the butchers for a bone when he did the shopping. The dog took the note to the village shop on his own & after that the old man would fasten a purse to his collar & tell him to go shopping for things like sweets & light bits & pieces. He had a couple of saddle bags made for him to bring the stuff back. He was front page news in the local paper when he went to the doctors surgery in another village when the old man was really ill. A real "Lassie"come home dog ;) He had been trained as a puppy to collect the hen's eggs each morning :D

Dalmatians were traditionally used for guarding; they've also been trained as gundogs, they've done well in agility; in Australia there are several which have qualified as Guide Dogs for the Blind. They're also good hunters. I don't know of any that herd, though.

Belgian Shepherds, of course!! :D Police dogs, MOD dogs, herding dogs, obedience, agility, flyball, working trials, ringsport, PAT dogs, guide dogs, assistance dogs, pets, show dogs, I even know of some used as sled dogs! I've probably forgotten a lot as well. Beat that, LOL!!!

goldmali good choice would it be all BS or a certain type,
- By Goldmali Date 03.02.06 17:04 UTC
Well Malinois tend to be the breed that does MOST of the work such as police dogs etc, but the only guide dogs I know if in BSD are Tervueren, and there has been Terv police dogs too althoigh it is rare. But Malinois are more often used for their working aspects than the rest.

I think I'd go for GSD's, as they have been guide dogs, they do agility, working trials and obedience too. But Cavs are the best dogs!! :-D
