Hello all

Just out of interest I would like to know when is the best time to do these on a welsh springer puppy?

Thanks and regards

You cannot have the hips done before your puppy is 12 months old & the eye test for WSS is still an annual one & usually this is not done on dogs under 2 years old & as there isn't a DNA test for  Goniodysgenesis/primary glaucoma & Hereditary Cataract for WSS this has to be done every year to ensure that if it does develop it can be monitored & treated as needed

Eyes can be done at any age, but I prefer to leave mine until they are 18 months old, or thereabouts. This gives the eyes a chance to 'mature'. It's also best to make sure that you check them on a yearly basis. I don't have Welsh Springers, I have large Munsterlanders, so don't know if you are checking for any particular problem (sorry about my ignorance ;) )

My male munster was hip- and elbow-scored at 3 1/2 years old. His results were excellent, so unless you think there may be a problem there is no rush to get them done early. The earliest you can get them done is 12 months.

I thought the glaucoma one is a one off unless the dog has a problem?  It is in our breed anyway.  I know that the other eye tests though are annually.

Thanks to all of you for your answers.  It was mere interest why I asked, I'm not looking for a specific disease or so.

the one off Glaucoma test is onlyof use when there is a predispositiion as in narrow angle Glaucoma.  In breeds with Open angle Glaucoma no predisposition is found and a dog may be fine one day with good pressures and develop Glaucoma the next.  Beagles and Elkhounds have this form, which is a bind as the mode of inheritance is unknown.
