..........that lots of staffies have to be rehomed? My mum's friend has been viewing lots of dog rescue centres and has commented on seeing a number of staffies, more than any other breeds. I have a 15 month old staffie and could never ever see a reason to rehome him, he is so much a part of my family now. Can anyone shed any light on the fact that staff's are the most common breed to see in a rescue centre? Is it because they can be so hyper sometimes? Or are a boistrous (sp?) breed?
Just picking your brains really.
Thanks

It appears Staffies are a very popular breed at the moment, and so very many are being bred, not always wisely either :(
The term 'Fashion ' springs to mind:rolleyes:
Edited to add: I have been told they are usually loving family dogs too.

I absolutely love staffies and am currently owned by 2 :)
We are now discussing re-homing a rescue staffy as we have the time, money and space for another one and rather than buy one,we are going to 'adopt' a rescue :)
I am sure the reason for there being so many is because in the early 90's a staff was the dog for all the wannabe hardmen to be seen with. This led to an increase in breeding, mostly bad breeding from people out to make a quick buck. This in turn led to very bad examples of the breed and because they aren't fashionable anymore the rescues are being over-run with the excess

I agree with Waffy. A lot of people near me have staffie X breeds and its a kind of status symbol thing. But you do notice the same people seem to change their dogs quite often to the "in breed". It was all rotties and staffies at one time and now it seems to be akitas. What happens to the previous dogs these people had?? None of the dogs look like pure breeds so no doubt they end up in the rescue centres.

The major thing is that too many are being bred! Even the KC have alerted to the fact that supply far outstrips demand in Staffies. As we so often see on here people owning a pet dog think it is their absolute right to breed from it even without it being a good show dog or having had all health tests done etc, or have good TEMPERAMENT (personally I see an awful lot of terribly dog aggressive Staffies, and I am certain the MAIN reason for this is not at all the breed but irresponsible breeding) and so many MANY people do it with Staffies "just for fun" or just to make money. These people are the ones that then aren't bothered WHO buys their pups, as long as the money is handed over, and so lots of unsuitable people end up with them, and when they find the novelty has worn off/it was harder work than they thought, the dog ends up in rescue.
Where I live, Staffs far outnumber other dogs. Mostly, you see them attached to lads with hoods or reversed baseball caps. Sadly, many of them have recieved little or no training, and if you happen to say to someone 'I am looking for a puppy', nearly everyone knows of Staff pups. I have actually been offered a puppy free, which was shocking to say the least. Unfortunately, a few dogs will follow the lead of their aggressive and mouthy little masters. Saying that, we have met a few well trained Staffies on our walks and they have been friendly and quite adorable. My concern is really the power in a Staffs jaw if it should decide to take my pup on. I really don't know the answer to the problem. As the fashion changes, there will be rather a lot of unwanted young Staffs. It is really sad.

i also feel the dogue to bordeaux (sp) is the in thing and there are loads for sale on free add sites- going for £1000

And Ridgebacks. 13 to a dozen.

its a shame to c staffs when they are just for show to give the bad boy image most of the ones i know are nice and well trained it amazes me how dogs go in and out of fashion at the moment it seems to be chi and staffs wonder what it will be next?
Not the in thing... that price has been standard for years.
Im the typical woman in pink and i have a huge hairy GSD boy.It looks so strange when we are out.He may be a GSD but he acts like a chi. :) The funniest thing i ever saw was late one night i was walking the two dogs and had to pass down a dark ally to get home when i saw this thug comming towards me.He was wearing ripped denims and had rings in every orrifice imaginable, covered with tattoos and a roll up hanging from the corner of his mouth.I pulled my dogs tight just in case as he came nearer. He saw my two and called out "BUTCH" Oh dear i thought, here comes the big Rottie or the dobe or Staffy and then round the corner came a .........................really cutie little JRT wearing a red spotty bandanna...He he he he.We all judge and shouldnt. This time i was just as guilty as the next.Shame on me. :)
