Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / in-breeding????

Hi, I was hoping that someone with a lot more knowledge of breeding would be able to give me their opinion on something. I am doing a lot of research on breeders for a future pup and I found a breeder that I really liked the look of, the dogs had a look that instantly appealed to me, they have good hip scores and I have emailed the owner a few times. Although whilst looking a bit closer at the sire and dams pedigree I noticed that the sires name cropped up in the dams pedigree...she would be mated to her own grandfather??? I was really shocked by this, it just seemed so wrong to me...although remember I know nothing about this...I am just a possible potential puppy owner...and I know it might be quite difficult to comment without knowing the lines..but is this something that is normal???

A bitch mated back to her grandfather is one of the best matings for fixing qualities.  So long as there are no serious faults that would also be amplified, it could produce a super litter.  If you trust the breeder and she is experienced, why not ask why she has done this mating?

Would love to know the breed but I agree with Val.

Thank you for your quick responses, well ok, that has answered my question, thank you! I didnt ask the breeder as I really am still at the research stage, so I just wanted a bit of 'back-up' knowledge before questioning her breeding, as I must admit, I thought it sounded rather odd at first..but hey, thats why I'm not a breeder and leave it to people that know!

perrodeagua - the breed is GR's.

This method is used consistently by breeders.  It involves the mating of dogs that are related past the third generation.  Usually grandfather to granddaughter or niece to uncle.  This method is used by breeders to allow them to amplify a certain trait without the risks of inbreeding.
