hi just need a bit of help, i have a 13 week old gsd pup, he is very loving nice big healthy pup, i have had him 3 weeks, but i cant get him to wee or do the other out side, he will come in and do it on the floor, i take him out and stand with him , and i would make a big fuss of him if he did one but no luck so far lol, i dont expect him to be clean in the house yet not for ages, but he holds him self for hours then he will do a big pool in the house, when he wees in the house i dont say a thing to him ,i just clean it up, i have even bought a dog creat but its not much help at all, when he has been in it 1 houre i take him outside, he not do a wee but he will in the house, if i stand in the middle of the garden he runs to the door to get back in, he has been like it from day 1,he has seen the vet, and he has no health problems, i have never had a problem like this befor, so any help would be great.

Basically stay out with him until he does"perform"& treat & praise even if it's onlty a drop of wee. Take him out on the hour every hour as well as when he wakes up been fed etc
I use a command whilst we are out & for Rjj my BC puppy I use "Be Quck"& when he has "been"I use it again slightly differently "Good quick quick"
As your puppy was 10 weeks old when you got him he might take a little longer depending on his background If he has been in kennels or with other puppies in the litter he will need a bit longer than avaerage(whatever that is)
When he goes indoors simply clean it up giving him no attention no "naughty boy" etc & don't forget to us2e bio wash liquid or similar to remove the odour
Hi,
Your doing the right thing by just ignoring the accident and clearing it up. If you actually catch him in the act say "ah ah" or whatever you choose short and sharp (not shouting at him though or you may frighten him) and immediately usher him outside, let him finish out there and lots of praise and treat. How often are you taking him out? - he really needs to be let out every hour, after meals and after play. A big play normally stimualates a pup to go to the toilet so maybe you could go into the garden for a play, keep a watchful eye and be ready with the praise. Watch in the house for any signs of him wanting the toilet like sniffing the floor, circling or getting restless. Also it's possible he's getting distracted when he's outside and forget about needing the toilet and then when he goes back inside and the fun, ie blowing leaf, or countless great smells have gone he suddenly remembers and goes - so maybe keeping him on the lead may be of help.

hi thanks for getting back to me,i take him out every hour, after his food and drink ,play ect,and also after sleep, yesterday i stayed in the garden for 1 over a hour to see if staying out for a long time would do the trick, but after 5 mins of being back in he did a wee ,and yes he was in a kennel, he seems as if he dislikes going outside at any cost,i can go down the garden but he just jumps up the door to get back in bless,in the house apart from the mess you could not find a nicer responsive dog, and he is very well behaved.

Just keep on & when he tries to go back indoors I would suggest getting his attention with a toy like a squeaky & play a little outside(yep I know it's cold LOl just wrap up warm ;)) He will catch on eventually If he's been in kennels for 10 weeks before you got him he will have been used to "going" where & when he wants
there is one thing for sure though, we are glad that we have him he is such a lovely boy,and i am sure he will turn out a good boy, as he is loved and in a stable home, he has been in a kennel and now he is in a family home ,i think he likes it to much to go out lol.
:D This so brings back memories of my boy Guiness when he was a pup.:)He was awful to house train, just so slow.We had to watch him 24/7 and as soon as we saw him squat we would rush over, scoop him up and run out side.More oftern than not we had a trail of wee but at least he finished outdoors.Soon he got the smell of where he was suppose to go which helped. We tried to get him in the same place each time so the smell of his own wee was strong in one spot encouraging him to go there. As soon as they open their eyes take them out.Ours was notorious for waking up,taking two steps and weeing where he stood, still half asleep.Having a puppy is so much fun...i almost miss it.:D
PS Guiness is a GSD too and the other pooch is a GSD cross BC :)

Does he always wee in the same spot in the house? And when he does wee what are you using to clean it up? Only some cleaning products have the effect of attracting the dog to use that spot as an indoor lavvy. A solution of biological washing powder is best for cleaning up accidents.
he dont do it in the same spot, he has a wee any place, a diff place each time, and i clean it up with washing powder, odd time he will do in the same place, i dont no how long it will take for chance to get the hang of it,but i am sure he wll one day.

This reminds me of what we went through last year....at the time we had 3 GSD's...Cain 3/12yrs, Lexy who at the time was about 12wks, and we had just taken on a foster dog Prince who was about 5yrs...we use to come down in the morning or after we had been out to find the odd accident (always little puddles, nothing else) and we just assumed it was the pup, which i found a bit odd as we had got her house trained, we thought taking in the new dog had had some sort of effect on her..But after getting her back into her crate training, we actually realised it was the 5yr old,(who had been kenneled for a while) its as Moonmaiden said in an earlier post if all they have known is a kennel, u think about it they are allowed to do all their necessary stuff in there without being corrected, so at the moment your little baby is just seeing your home as a kennel but just a tad bigger...i no its a pain, but persevere, we did with Prince, mind u it took about a month in total but if we can do it with a 5yr old who had been kenneled for a couple of years u can definitly do it with your little one.
Good Luck
Nicci

If he dam was kept in a kennel, she probably never learnt either, but don't give up hope - he's still young. Just keep doing what other's have told you. (I assume he's been checked by a vet and there's no medical reason?)

Once you've cleaned it up with washing powder, you also need to break down the fatty acids which hold the smell. You can do this by spraying with surgical or white spirit (test the surface first ;))
thanks digger, i not give up,yes he has seen a vet there is nothing wrong with him

You will get there in the end, sarah although it may take time. I retrained a 6 year old cocker who had been "untrained" and taught to wee on the kitchen floor because his elderly owner didn't have the mobility to take him outside every time he needed to go. Bob wasn't the brightest tool in the box but he caught on after about a month of treating him like a puppy again and spending hours outside in the garden. It wasn't enough just to take him out there though because he needed to learn to perform "on command" rather than by accident. Otherwise he'd wander happily around the garden before coming indoors to wee on the kitchen floor again!
It's only a personal opinion but I reckon that once a pup cracks the command and performance idea then you are well on your way to success with housetraining.
thanks roz, am sure we will get there, he is a smashing pup
well he has been outside today for a wee first time,i am so pleased with him.
Don't mean to put a downer on this but it took me nearly a year to fully train my Rotti, she was terrible exactly the same as yours she would hold herself and only do it in the house the odd occasion she would go outside most of the time when she was locked out the back for a couple of hours, I shut the kitchen door one night so she only had my hallway and wala she never went wee wee or do do in my house again, some are so strange
Housetraining can be difficult but it sounds like you are doing A LOT of things right.
One thing that might help you a bit here is to put yourself in the frame of mind that when your pup has an accident in the house, it is YOUR fault, not his. If he knew what you wanted him to do, he would do it.
You need to watch the pup ALL THE TIME when he is in the house. If you can\'t watch him, put him in his crate. When you are in the house and able to watch him, tether him to you so he doesn\'t wander off to do his business.
So, when he is in the house, he is either crated or tethered to you. No grey area. He will get it, probably in short order, if you are consistent with him.
if your pup is still having a problem with going out side why dont you try paper training for a while get the puppy pads there great keep it near the door or where he normally would go see if you can at least keep him from doing it on your floor then keep trying him in the garden
i have a bulldog who is 4months he is good with his potty training but all of a sudden its like hes forgetting or being lazy and hes just weeing on carpet does any one have any ideas why?

If you are using paper or puppy pads then I'm not at all surprised and to be honest I wouldn't advise anyone to train with either. Pups invariably need training twice over and in the meantime often find it difficult to differentiate between paper, pads and carpets!
I know that housetraining can seem endless but it isn't. And the more persistent you are the quicker the process comes to an end.
i dont use puupy mats i train him to wee out side but now and again he does it inside which im annoyed with
He's only 16 wks old! He's not fully toilet trained yet - you need to keep taking him out every hour or so and give him a treat when he toilets outside.

any change in behaviour (assuming he's actually got worse and was getting towards being mostly trained in the house) should be checked by a vet to rule out a medical reason - particularly urine infections which could cause this sort of symptom and go on to cause kidney damage if left untreated. It may be he's just weeing on carpet because he doesn't like getting his paws wet. It could be because he's done it there before, and can smell the scent which calls him back..... (Always clean up throughly after an 'accident' - blot up any excess, then wash with biological washing powder, then, when the area is dry, spray with white or surgical spirit - this removes the fatty acids which holds the scent molecules)
