Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / discharge after breeding

Hi,

I have a bitch that is aprox 17 days after breeding.  Usually at around 3 weeks in, I might see  clear gel discharge.  With this one bitch, I think this happened with her first breeding also.  she has a drippy pale yellow discharge at times.  Have any of you seen this happen?  The  vet had me put her on clavamox just in case something is brewing.

Thank you

Do you mean after mating or after whelping.  After whelping I wouod expect disharge for several weeks.

i would never want a yellow discharge after breeding or whelping a bloody discharge after whelping is fine also a little green after whelp and after mating and the season is over just clear anything else and i would be having my girl checked. A yellow discharge could be puss does it have a smell?

A straw coloured dischargge is ussual in season though.  Does it smeell unpleasant?

If this is 17 days after mating, I would guess she has an infection - did she have antibiotics prior to mating?

mine always have a pale yellow discharge as do most of my friends dogs approx 2 weeks after being mated, i have had mine checked before and they have been fine, i now take it as a sign they have taken and when i see it i know they have, it always proves right for me but i know what you mean when you say it could be infection, get her checked anyway, good luck and let us know if shes taken, i bet she has

yes louzola,  This is what I am finding with her also.  The pale yellow is an indication of pregnancy. At least this is what I'm seeing with her .  or hoping :-)

no I did not put her on antibiotics prior to breeding.  As I mentioned, I vaguely remember this happening with her last pregnancy.
This is after a BREEDING  not after whelping.  I'm hoping if it is a minor infection that it didn't effect anything.  I'm sure it could also be a urinary tract infection.

Here in the UK breeding = The process of producing the next generation, we would say mating to indicate the act of copulation, and whelping the act of birth.  Are you perhaps in the USA where they use the term breeding interchangeably?

Yes, I'm in the US.  Mating=Breeding :-)
Sorry

That's Ok, I have great fun with the common language between US, and Ozzie friends often having to clarify exact meanings of terms we use :D

Back to back breeding is another one.

At first I was horrified thinking they were advocating mating on each season, but they meant mating on successive days

The other funny one  is when they say 'bred', we mean that we are the breeder of a dog/bitch when we say we 'bred a bitch/dog', when they mean mated.

In my experience too a yellow discharge is not normal.  I have only seen this in dogs that were not in pup and got an infection afterwards.  I try have my bitches smeared now before a mating just to make sure they are nice and clear of infections.  I would think your girl needs some antibiotics, however you must be real careful what you give her.
A normal discharge is straw coloured, and even thick stringy.  Yellow and watery suggests an infection.  Also the male dog may need some antibiotics too ?

Yes, I immediately put her on clavamox.  She hasn't had it since that first day.  I hope it didn't impact her fertility.
