Topic Dog Boards / General / separate?

I just wondered how many people have both an entire dog and a bitch in the same house. And when you leave them - do you separate them both all the time or just when the bitch is in season?  Also how do you separate them? - If you just shut them in different rooms wont the dog scratch the door to bits etc?

Cheers

I have an entire dog and bitch. The bitch will be spayed after her next (2nd) season.

I rarely leave mine for very long, but when they are left, they are seperated. Purely because they would create a riot  And both being large breed dogs, I wouldn't take the risk of accidental injury to each other during one of their "playfests" :D

My dog has never scratched the door, either when my bitch is in season or when she's not. (we think that he's asexual ;) luckily for us ) They have always been left in seperate areas when I'm out, so are both well used to the routine.

No, I've only ever kept bitches.  I've heard of too many people, even very experienced breeders who should know better, have accidental matings, and people who try to keep dogs and bitches together in normal residental property, who've had complaints from neighbours when the dog has howled for days on end! :(  I wouldn't want to live like that let alone subject my neighbours and dogs to it!  Even when I had kennels and adequate facilites to seperate them, I still wouldn't want the upset for myself and my dogs when they are used to all living together.

I have two entire boys and two girls who get on wonderfully.  I swap my two girls over with my mums when they come into season, so I'm quite lucky.  I also seperate them quite early on in their season and don't take them back until 4 weeks later.

I've had various combinations of that set up - more recently one entire of each sex and an elderly spayed bitch, together at all times except when the younger bitch was in season and my vintage girl was given "turns" at keeping each of the others company when necessary (rare event for the dogs to be left unattended for long or regularly, particularly in seasons).

Never had any scratched doors etc but my latest male had been used at stud several times so knew when the time was just right - we didn't dare leave the house those days :D and in any event I took him almost everywhere with me anyway.

regards Teri :)

Both my male and female are entire and my female has only had one season so far, shes still young. My dog didnt bother with the female at all during her season, infact he tended to avoid her. :) We did keep them seperated at night and watched them 24/7 during the day.Guiness didnt seem at all bothered and didnt scratch though he was a bit sad being apart from his friend. :)
