Hi have you not got the book of the bitch its very good. What is it you want to know. Have you got the whelping bed set up for her, and heat available,is she ok in herself , is she still eating ok.if she go's off her food or starts to look a little treased or starts diging at foor its a good sign that your pups will soon be arriving just keep your eyes on her, regards debbie.

Oh Jazz, I hope somebody with more experience than me will be along soon to advise you. I have only bred one litter, although I did whelp the bitch myself. I expect you have already done alot of reading up for this important occasion, (do you have a copy of the Book of the Bitch?) so it's probably a case of just trusting in yourself, having confidence that you will be OK. Of course it's a worrying time, but most bitches do the hard part naturally. I would definately make sure your Vet knows when you are expecting this litter, so that you can get help if neccessary.

Good Luck,
Dawn R.

Hi Jazz1,

Can only echo the other replies that you should read, re-read and then read again the Book of the Bitch and any other whelping material you can get hold of.  There are lots of links on-line to helpful sites some with video clips (Google is your friend ;) )  Has your girl's breeder had any in-put in this mating?  If so then don't be shy to pester the life out of her if you have any concerns at all.

Also let you vet know that whelping is imminent and have his/her telephone number on redial on your phone.  If you have any breeders near to you or through friends from dog club who have experience of whelping ask if someone can be on hand should you need them.

Over and above that have all your whelping supplies to hand and don't let your girl out of your sight even to relieve herself in the garden (she may try to whelp in a place inaccessible to you).

It's a very exciting but also stressful experience when the first stages of labour begin because while we all hope everything will be text book, our girls unfortunately don't read the books!   Try and stay calm and hopefully the knowledge that you have emergency measures in place should (God forbid) they be needed will help you focus on the miracle it is.  When things start if your are in ANY doubt at all, call your vet immediately.

Best wishes, Teri :)
