Topic Dog Boards / Health / After neutering..

Hello all...
I am probably just being a worry wart but my dog just got neutered yesterday. Everything seems to be okay, I got him an e-collar so he can't chew at the stitches, but it is still all red and swollen. I know that this is typical but how long should it last? Also it is not just red around the stitches but also around his balls (sorry to be so blunt) although this looks a little more like a rash? Is there anything I can put on it? Or should I just let it go a couple more days to see if it clears up? I would greatly appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

I do hope you mean an Elizabethan collar!

Yes I mean an Elizabethan collar, not the actually e-collar that shocks the dog. Seriously though, if I was worried enough about my dog having swelling/rash, to post something, do you actually think that I would use an e-collar on my dog!! When I went to get one, that is what they called it, an e-collar.

Not trying to be rude, but why must people read a post and then respond to something entirely different?? And then never even answer the question that was asked??

Well that is a term more often applied to electric shock collar and we have had a couple of references to the same today so I think it perfectly reasonable to seek clarification.  Why should you mind that?
In answer to the original question, yes there is often a lot of redness and swelling following an operation this is a natural inflamatory reaction in addition any area shaved may develop a razor rash.  I wouldn't suggest you put anything on it at all as this could encourage a moist atmosphere in which bacteria thrive.  Just use the collar and any inflammatories if prescribed and check the area does not become weepy or anything else to suggest infection in which case report back to the vet.

this sounds okay- it'll prob be a rash from the clippers-as OP has said.
look out for swelling,discharge/weeping.
dont put anything on it.
to avoid him being irritated by the stitches- try to prevent him from jumping/sprinting ;)

Can you see why I was concerned?
