Topic Dog Boards / General / what lead and coller??
- By Nico101 [gb] Date 24.01.06 16:27 UTC
 Hi just a quick thought wondered what other people thought on the matter were? what coller do you use on ur dog? i've got a rolled leather one on my weimy and he doesn't wear it in the house and tend to use a horse lead  rope, just wondered what sorts of coller you use and if you leave them on?? (also what would you use on a cav??)

Thanks

i use soft leather collars on my rotties one of them has a felix lead and the other i use a nylon lead i would use a solf nylon one on a cav. my dogs where there collars most of the time

I use a flat bridle leather collar on both my Weimaraner and my GSD.  I do not leave them on unsupervised.  Leads are non slip webbing/rubber ones as used for reins as they are soft and NEVER slip on the strongest dog in the wettest weather.

The webbing/rubber leads sound very good, do you know if they're available to purchase online?  I need something with a good grip for walking my two Labs.

Thanks

I use lined bridle leather hound collars for the hounds and rolled leather half chokes for the shelties. Flat leather bridle leather leads for all of them. Alternatively I sometimes use rope leads with a slip loop if I'm in a hurry or just going down the field. None of mine wear collars when at home / out in the paddock unsupervised.

None of mine wear collars in the house or secure garden. When we go out for a walk they wear bridle leather half checks with name tags, id chip tags on. I use canvas leads for road work and rope slip leads in the field. When visiting friends or going racing or any other occasion when they want to look a bit smarter the borzois have vintage silk printed 2" hound collars that are lined with velvet and have solid brass fittings - they are absolutely gorgeous :) The collies 'special' collars for agility etc are printed canvas - well they are only collies.... :D :D

My rott mix has a rolled leather collar as anything else damages her coat; my dobe has a flat nylon clip collar at the moment, but he's getting a rolled leather one too soon - fur's not an issue, but when he settles down for the night his neck goes rather wrinkly and I can't help but think that an inch thick collar must be uncomfortable :D  They wear them all the time as well.  I'd like to leave them off - I worry about injuries from playfighting if teeth got caught in them - but I don't trust my dad and brother enough not to lose my dogs when I'm not there!  It's a complex of mine :p

I might well abandon the leather collars altogether though - I've been looking at the break-away collars (my two wrestle a lot, and I'm not always there to watch for problems).

As for leads; on a pavement walk round town, I use 30" denim leads from Pets at Home.  For a one-dog walk with random exploration of little footpaths - 30" denim for the pavement stuff, and a 3m 6mm braided rope lead for the exploration.  I also use a flexi on my dobe if we're walking in a particular park or woodland walk, as he'll find dead rabbits and run off to eat them if he's off leash.

Get yourselves to Lidl, yes Lidl the cheap shop shop. They have got some great leather collars that I've only ever seen for £45.00 elsewhere and some brilliant rope training leads, couldn't believe my luck!

Mine dont wear collars at all, only dogmatics in busy circumstances otherwise just rope slip lead.
- By supervizsla Date 24.01.06 22:48 UTC
apart from the fact that it is a legal requirement for dogs to wear id tags at all times when out
- By mygirl [gb] Date 24.01.06 22:50 UTC
Anna that depends on the level of control you have on your dog ;)
And if i'm with them why the need for an id tag? i can certainly identify them as mine :D
- By chrisjack Date 24.01.06 22:56 UTC
but that doesnt matter apparently- its against the law, to have a collar and form of id(tag/capsule) on the dog.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 24.01.06 22:59 UTC
And has anyone stopped you? :D so if i walk down the street with a dog under control but without an id tag i'd get fined? yet a dog out of control in park with an id tag the owner would get a warning so to speak? (and theres plenty)
I'd hope the police/dog warden had better things to do with their time. :)
- By supervizsla Date 24.01.06 23:04 UTC
no one has stopped me cos my dogs are undercontrol and with id tags.

i didn't mean for this to offend you and i didn't make the rule up either.
i only put it in as  a bit of information

sorry
- By chrisjack Date 24.01.06 23:07 UTC
yes anna- was just gonna say same- i didnt make the law up, just thought i'd share it with you all, not saying im preaching, cos i aint. as i said mum doesnt use collars, i do though.
- By supervizsla Date 24.01.06 22:57 UTC
i know was just being panikity (sp?) :)
also it depends on where you r. if you live in the highlands of scotland then no i would say you don't need a tag but living in london it is a different matter as in my park there is a dog warden and if he sees people with dogs with out tags then he has a word with them.

sorry
anna

oh and my dogs are thouroughly under control :)
- By supervizsla Date 24.01.06 22:58 UTC
just to add - it is still illegal not to have a dog with a tag tho!
- By mygirl [gb] Date 24.01.06 23:01 UTC
I'll bear that in mind :D :D i think the purpose of a tag was to minimise the stray element tho and considering mine arent ever strays its unlikely i'll be pulled up.

OMG I can't believe that u believe that you don't need to have id or collar on your dog!!! It is THE LAW - i'm sorry if you are offended but your level of arrogance needs challenging...u are NOT above the law....and should do as all respectable dog owners do and abide by it.

The same mentality as someone who walks their 'well controlled' dog off lead along pavements next to main roads...yes, I've seen this......I don't care how 'under control' they are...it only takes one unforseen occurence to potentially have dire consequences!

Jeez!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By chrisjack Date 24.01.06 23:03 UTC
yes- a policeman once told my mum off for not having her gsd collared- just on slip lead, he didnt take it further because of some reason or another! mum still doesnt use collars tho'.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 24.01.06 23:14 UTC
I'd think its just were you live but i doubt a dogwarden/police could fine you soley on the basis of a dog untagged but under control.

As far as i remember it was to combat the large number of strays on the streets, but then again you get little hitlers in all number of vocations. :D
