I Have a Miniature Schnauzer who is nearly 7 months old who has just gone into season.With not owning a bitch before i was wondering if anyone could tell me how long i would expect my puppy to be in season for??

Seasons last an average of 21 days, but it's best to keep her away from all other dogs, not even allowing her in your own garden unattended, for 28 days to be on the safe side.

You'll probably find buying a copy of "The Book of the Bitch" by Evans and White, invaluable. :)

Thank you very much for this information! Me and my husband were very concerned today after we noticed blood on the backs of her legs and with only ever owned a Dog in the past we were not too sure of how long she would continue to bleed! She seems to be weeing a lot more as well!

Jayne, one thing to keep in mind here is not only will the boys be making every attempt to get to her but she will be making every attempt to get to them.  She can be bred through a chain link fence.  Be vigilant.  7 months is way too young, IMHO, for her to be bred.

There are many reasons! She may be on breeding terms. They may want to show her and have a litter when she's older if she proves good enough. They may well be taking the advice of their vet to wait until she's mature before spaying her. They may also not believe in unnecessary surgery. Thankfully this isn't a police state, and owners still have freedom of choice in this matter. :)
