Hi there, I have taken my SBT to get spayed this morning. I was just told by vet that she is bleeding. Apparently they gave her some blood. The rest of the procedure was ok. Although the vet said she should be ok, I'm worried sick. They will be able to tell me how she's doing in the next three hours. She is 2years and 3 months old. She had 8 pups (10 weeks ago) They would like to keep her overnight for observation.  We did some research on spaying, asked questions, talked to some breeders & vets and really weighed all the pros and cons before deciding to spay. As can be expected some people are for and some against. Her delivery was problematic and she had to get a caesarean section. Based on vets recommendation it is not a good idea for her to fall pregnant again. Have anyone experienced this before - I.e. bleeding complications following spaying procedure? Any info/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanx Jean

I have ahd a bitch spayed at the time of a C seciton and also 11 weeks after delivery of a litter, both with no problems.

I don't know if your breed has any tendencey to Von Willebrands, but if the breed does this coudl be a reason for the problems,a nd woudl be worth testing for so the situation is known if she ever needs operating on in future.

Thanx for the reply. I assume Von Willebrands has something to do with the bleeding? I think the thing that confuses me is that there were no bleeding complications at the time of the C section. We took her in that evening and 4 hours later we were home with the pups feeding. I will keep this in mind. Maybe I'm missing something. I just hope she will be ok.

I have just spoken to the vet. Aparently she was bleeding all over - internal (severed stumps etc) & external. He says she seems fine know. The additional blood she was given seem to have stopped the bleeding. She will still have to stay overnight for observation.Vet says that she may be nearing her heat cycle. Previous heat cycle ended roughly 18 Sept 2005.

That means she came in season in August so due about February if she has a 6 months cycle.

Slightly different, but another reason nt to spay a prebuscent bitch as you ahve no idea how close to a season you may be.

I am lucky as my bitcheds hae always goen aobut 7 months or a b8t more if they have a litter.  So spaying 11 weeks post whelp, or 23 weeks from previous season usually means that the next season wouldn't be due for some 7 to 10 weeks.
