Can anyone please give me some advice re mange, I have been asked to clip a cocker spaniel who has been suffering from mange since september 2005, he is near the end of his treatment.  I will go to the owners home to do the clipping, apart from wearing gloves and sterilising all my equipment, any thing else I should know, also how short should I go, as I think the owner wants him clipped all over.
Any advise please.

Which mange?  And do you steralise with ultra violet?

OK.  The mite can be transmitted from dog to dog, jumping on (but not living on) you, your clothes or your equipment.  It can live, not on the host, for 36-48 hours.  I wouldn't risk my other clients' dogs if I couldn't steralise with ultra violet or not use any of my equipment for 72 hours.

I have treated dogs with sarcopts, but only as the last dog before the weekend, when I have undressed and showered myself in the parlour, so as not to allow them to transfer to my own dogs, steralised in a steralising cabinet (which I used for all my equipment between each dog anyway) and still left everything untouched for 72 hours.

There is no need to clip the dog short at all.  With a plastic rake, you can get the solution to the skin if the dog is well groomed.  I would transfer the treatment into a spray bottle, spray it all over and then comb through with a plastic rake.

Can I ask what treatment the cocker isi having. My dog had sarcoptic mange last year and was treated with three consecutive months of Stronghold. It came back again about 6 weeks ago, and we are going through another round of Stronghold. I'm interested if there is a another more effective treatment.

Thanks

Kat
