Hi,

does anyone know of a soft and absorbent horse bedding that would be suitable to use for rabbits? My house bunnies are going to be living outside in a summer house from spring onwards and I dont want to use wood shavings because of the phenols that can cause respiritry(sp) problems. My vet mentioned horse bedding but I don't know much about horses!

Thanks

There is a mixture of straw and shavings which is new on the market and it smells of Eucalyptus as it is mixed in it.  Ideal for any animals with respiritory problems.  Cannot remember the name for the lfe of me but will try and get the name for you tomorrow.

Also have you considered shredded paper which is a good alternative and dust free.??

You can also get a beding it think it is caled Absorb, it is like rolled up balls of hard paper and absorbs the wet very well and dust free I have my parrot on this as it is dust free.
Some things for you to look at and I will come back if I can remember the name of the bedding.  Go to your local horse feed merchant and have a look at eh alternatives also.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

We have just changed our horses bedding from shavings to this new stuff called eazibed, its like wood chipping, and dust extracted, it also rots quiker, if app £5.50 for a 5kg sack, you nearest horse feedmerchant will sell it, their is loads of differents bedding now, if you visit you local feed merchant they will be able to advise you on what will be best.

Some places stock a newspaper-based bedding, it's basically little squares of newspaper.  There's a couple places near me that sell it - very cheap too, about £3 for a huge bale.  The only downside is the papers they use - sometimes print can run off and you end up with bunnies with grey feet!

Personally I use Yesterday's News for my little furries, but I don't know how economical that would be for you - I buy the biggest bag at £9.99, and it covers about 24 square feet.  Very, very absorbent, not very soft though; but small enough pellets not to cause discomfort.  Safe if the rabbits munch it too.
