Just had to share

I bought Ilya home today, he's a 7 month old male degu.  I spotted him in a pet store all by his lonesome a couple of weeks ago, with his brother alone in the cage below him.

My plan was to buy both, get them living harmoniously and then intro them to the 3 boys I rehomed from Zoe... but ilya's brother was sold yesterday :(

Still, it's going well for the first day... Danny, Vasha and Kolya (my 3 lads) have been out scrambling all over everything they could reach including Ilya's temporary cage, and him and Vasha had a good sniff with happy noises through the bars, no upset squeaks or anything bad.  Brilliant!  With any luck the four will be living together in no time, and Ilya will finally have the company he should have, not to mention a heck of a lot of space and a wheel!

Very excited today :D

Fantastic!!

Degus are great arn't they! I dont own any but was involved with them when at uni - used to help out in the animal care department as I missed my gerbils/birds at home.

Can honestly say I have never seen a wheel in with them. The all important environmental enrichment was kinda lacking for both chinches and degus - different levels and sand baths were classed as enrichment.....wheels well that would be a fantastic toy for them!

Anyway good luck with your latest addition and I hope they all can settle in together soon

They are tough to buy wheels for - my boys came home with a part-chewed 12" wodent wheel, which bit the dust after about 5 months.. now they have a 12" silent spinner wheel, and they've already started on that!

YEY!! Nice one :D Hope they are all happy together :) I do still miss them though :'( even though I look after 10 at work none of them are a match for those 3 Nikita :)

I thought that degu's and gerbil's shouldn't have a wheel because,
of thier tails, if they get caught up they shed them. I workked in a,
pet shop years ago and the breeder didn't recommend wheels.
Anyway, i am glad you are giving this lonely one some company,
they don't like being alone at all. Have fun and enjoy them.

That is correct mdacey :) especially with those horrible wire wheels, but the one Nikita has/had was a 'wodent' wheel which is big and solid so cannot trap their tail :)

Really pleased for you :)

Don't blame you Zoe, they are fab lil guys!

Ilya is a wonderful boy - he's only been home a day and already he's putting paws on my hand for oats - but the best bit was last time I went to say hi, I tried to scratch his head - and he twisted his head right onto the side so I could scratch his chin and chirruped!  Wonderful!

Ah! I've been looking for that site JG!  It slipped out of my favourites list somewhere

My boss has asked me what they are twice now, and I always say they look like a cross between a gerbil and a guinea pig :D

It's all going well, I did the first intros tonight, two degus at a time, and apart from a brief boxing match it was all chirrups and niceties. Woo!
