Is dog sperm the same as human sperm in that one sex sperm travels faster than the other sex.  Reason I ask is that when we have mated Purdy on day 13 we had 10 females 3 males and with her second mating day 11 got 7 dogs 5 females third time on day 12 we had 4 boys 9 girls.  When we did Tigger she was on day 11 and she had 6 boys 3 girls.  Molly day 12 - 5 girls 4 boys.

I suppose really what I am asking is has anyone noticed whether the day of mating seems to influence sex.

Miranda was mated for her 2 litters (To the same dog) on Day 13.   First mating I had 8 dogs & 6 bitches, second mating 5 dogs & 9 bitches.

Her dam, Asti,  had one litter and was mated on day 13 too, she had 5 dogs & 9 bitches.   I don't know what this proves - if anything?

I think you'd need to relate the day of mating to the day of ovulation, not just which day of the season, to learn anything worthwhile.

Clover was mated on Day 13 and had 2 dogs and 2 bitches; her second litter was born after matings on days 18 and 20 and we had 2 dogs and 3 bitches (disappointingly small litters, but she's not a huge bitch).

My first bitch was mated on day 12 and had 4 dogs and 6 bitches. Others have been similarly balanced.

Yes it is, male sperm travels faster but doesn't survive as long. I found this out from Proffessor David Morton, who is also a human AI specialist, in Birmingham when doing collections from my dog to send to NZ. To take advantage of this of course you would need to know exactly when your bitch was ovulating. In theory if you mate her before she ovulates, assuming she was standing of course then the male sperm may well die off leaving you with a predominately female litter. If you mate a few days after ovulation the male guys will swim faster and you should get a mostly male litter :)   Also older males of both species are supposed to produce more female than male sperm. - HTH

That is really interesting as my dog sired a litter recently and we suspect that the ovulation took place later than day 12 we mated her on as she was 4 days late giving birth and she had 4 males and 2 bitches.  Again with Tigger we did her on day 11 and again on day 13 the only time we have ever done two matings and she had a predominantly male later and was again late whelping.  tigger was actually shown to ovulate on day 12 but we had to do it one day earlier as we couldnt get there on day 12.

Thanks for the information.

The times I have premated my bitches and mated late I have ahd even litters sex wise, with slight predominance for bitches.

The one litter as it turns out was way before ovulation (prolonged season probably with false start, mated at what I thought was 12 days, but pregnancy testing at 28 days showed young for dates pups) I got a small litter of all bitches born 5 days late.

I have always wondered, as my bitches have always mated late intheir fertile periods, and often only once.  Out of 11 liters ( ahve had a predominance of bitch pups of about 2 to 1, maybe coincidence and I am due to get a few all male litters, knowing my luck when I want my next bitch pup to keep.

Last time I kept a pup there were only two bitch pups with an obvious choice, the repeat mating yielded me 4 bitches I would have just as happily kept 2 or even 3 of these for quality.

My second choice bitch won her class at Machester yesterday for her new owners, and the sisters in Holland and USA are yet to start their show careers being just 6 months old.

Can't wait for the to mature so I can see how they compare to their older sister, who has messd me about not being in whelp when she showed all the behavioural signs of so being.

Wow - did I just add them up right - 56 puppies? Did you manage to find homes for them all? Did you not encounter any problems with hearing out of all of them? :)

Sorry it sounds awful when you say it like that.  This is over a period a few years and differnt bitches.

I have never had any problems finding good homes apart from with Tiggers litter in which I had one returned to me who is still with me and another one who I never got back as one said he wanted me to have the dog back and the other refused on the prinicpal he had asked me first.  They seemed good owners but you never can tell who is going to be good and who isnt I obviously thought they were normal at the time but in this day and age relation ship breakdowns are all to frequent.

I have only ever had two uni laterals out of all those puppies (hearing only in one ear).  One of the bitches I bred also had a litter with full hearing.  The current is approxiamately 20% but we are just very very lucky and I am sure it will have a disaster at some point.  The litter my stud dog has just sired had homes in the first couple of days. :)  I currently have quite a large waiting list for my next litter.

Thats good. I know from the one litter of dallies I had yonks ago what hard work they are - and I only had 5. I struggled to get a good home for the liver puppy - but I suspect its because I really wanted to keep her and no-one was good enough. She was gorgeous :)

Strangely enough it was the 5 liver dogs in Tiggers litter which were the problem   People think livers are mutants although in my current batch I have 4 people who want them. :)  Out of 9 puppies 7 were livers even though she is black.
