If your MIL is experienced enough in the breed to have a dog
and a bitch, not only of a quality to breed (having good results from all the appropriate health screening tests) but also capatable by pedigree and conformation then I would imagine she will be experienced enough, or have a mentor experienced enough, to know, but perhaps this is you asking and not her :) If this was an accidental mating I think she should talk to her vet about getting her spayed immediately to avoid an unplanned litter in a breed where careful breeding from health screened parents is so important.

She says it was not planned she seperated them but her husband came home from work and not thinking left door open and the dog got in. She was not going to breed but wanted her to have a few seasons before getting her spayed. this has been ok in past. If it was for me i was askin i would be honset enough to say. I do have a gsd bitch she is 8mth just had season and is booked in to be spayed in 3mth. I also have a lurcher (my husbands really) and a collie cross.

I would advise your mum to get the bitch spayed so terminating any pregnancy, it is by far the most responsible course of action.
Rearing a litter is not only time consiming but expensice,a dn if the parents have not been health screened there could be heart ach for her and the new owners of the pups, not forgetting that she could be taken to court if a pup develops a problem for which the parents coudl ahve been screned.
There is also the lifelong responsibility to the pups, even the best chosen homes sometimes fail to be lifelong.

Specially if as she was planning to 'have a few seasons before spaying', this might be a young bitch, too young to have puppies safely - the OP doesn't say the age?

why do you say ha ha??? i would disagree-- you cant tell at 4/5 weeks for sure-- even if there is a discharge, i wasnt sure untill i felt them move at 8 weeks.

She could be scanned or x-rayed - otherwise basically wait and see.

If your mother-in-law does not want her bitch to have the pups, it is not too late for her to have the morning after injection (which can be taken weeks after the mating) It is ony about £25, quicker and a hec of a lot cheaper than speying (if this is the reason that she has not already booked her in to be speyed.) If the dogs did tye then I would take her for the injection anyway to be on the safe side.
TO DEDLIN, I SAY HA HA AS I FELT SORRY FOR THE GIRL, SHE ONLY ASKED A QUESTION, OK? ALSO LYSSA I THINK YOUR ADVICE IS THE BEST YOU SEEM TO KNOW YOUR STUFF. HOPE YOU GET ON ANYWAY, GOOD LUCK.

As the plan was to spay the bitch anyway and she is now over two, woudl sem most sensible to spay her?

pamrats
Any reson why you are using caps ? There is no need to shout

i would say if the litter is unwanted to spay now there has been no proof that letting a bitch have a couple of seasons is better than having her spayed before any if she was a pet and nuthing more. Take her to the vets have her checked and if your mother is willing to say her now do so before she is too far in the pregnancy. Also if she wanted to let the girl have a few season why did she not desex the male ?
are you unsure if she is having a phantom or if it is real? because the only way to tell at this stage is a vet visit which if she is going to let the girl whelp vet checkups are needed to insure her health and see if she may possibly have some probs so your mother will be prepared (financially) for inductions and c sections.
sorry for shouting didnt mean to ....
