Hi ive got a 13week bulldog pup when i take him round to my mums her 10year old male mongral doesnt like it he always jumps on sofa but growls and barks constantly at pup he has never gone for him and has had plenty of oppotunities its just like hes jelous of him and doesnt like the fact hes in his home there fine in garden but if the pup chases him hes not its very funny does any one have any answers or ideas thanks

It sounds as though he's not jealous, but rather scared of the pup! Many dogs (as opposed to bitches) are. Make sure that the dog has his escape route where the pup can't follow and be a pain in the neck to the old lad in his own home.

The dog is 10yrs old and thats verrrrry old to be bothered by a puppy and even worse to find it funny when the puppy chases it!
Its like a 75yr old woman being chased round the garden by a child

He's just like any old fogey tired and set in his ways and at that age he should be left alone in peace and quiet. :)

A lot of male dogs don't "do"puppies my late BC's never played with them even when they were young Inn nature the adult males don't do much nuturing of very young puppies.
He's just being a dog(in the biological sense)& like JG says make sure the oldie can get away from the pup

mine isnt comfortable with pups either, he looks like he wants to get away, small older dogs no problem, whats it all about?

It usually a male thing as in the wild males of the canine species rarely play a major part in puppy rearing which is left to the younger females after weaning. I was quite surprised that my next to youngest cavalier has taken to my BC puppy fronm day one & he even instigates play wihich isn't JD's style at all

must be Rjj's personality :D

Now that is weird my dane dog just adores pups yet my bitch totally abhores them she cant be doing with the in your face reaction from pups and prefers her own space.
thanks to every ones advice i have thought of all you have said.So would you say that once my pup is older they should get on?

My BC's were usually ok by the time the puppies were 6 months old & got their adult teeth & stopping mouthing etc ;)
well i hope he does get used to the pup as it will be good for the both of them.

Kirsty, all the while the older dog feels harassed in his own house he won't be minded to tolerate the pup. So you've got to work on settling the pup down rather than expecting the older dog to assume it will be "good for him" to have this noisy little intruder invading his space! As others have said, making sure he has an escape route will help and he may just take himself off to be alone for a while. Quite a lot of older dogs are unimpressed by puppies but may be more tolerant as the pup grows up. However, creating an atmosphere where he might be minded to feel tolerant is something that needs doing now.
my pup dosnt bark or even bother the older boy its all the older boys problem i always have the back door open he will venture down off the sofa to mess him and the pup lets him but if the pup looks at him or goes near him he barks jumps on sofa but carries on barking.Even when the pup forgets hes there and plays with his ball the older boy barks hes never gone for him thank got but just dont know why he does it een when there in garden if pup goes near him he barks thats what makes me think part of it is jelously.
