Does anyone have experience of a dog which salivates profusely, and I do mean hugely in the presence of the smallest amount of food? I'm currently looking after a dog which will have saliva running out of its mouth like water at the idea of being given a piece of kibble. This makes reward based training quite a sticky event!
I'm used to salivating dogs - one of our previous Labs would have a long string of saliva hanging off his chops when you turned to put his food bowl down but this does seem excessive and I'm just wondering if this can be linked to any other problems or if it's just ... a thing he does.
One of my Labs always does this ,even when anyone else is eating, however on one occasion she was foaming at the mouth,so of to the vets we went and it was a reaction to frogs, she even tries to eat frogs if she gets the chance,Labs are real food lovers anything and everything.Typical Lab I would say.
It was my terrier who tried a frog - boy, did she sneeze.
You may well be right, Sheila and yes, he too will salivate if we are eating or cooking something particularly tempting. However, this is not the greediest Lab I ever had and he does not currently scavenge or poo gobble and he definitely wouldn't try frog.
I am interested to know if anyone had a dog where this over-reaction was linked to any kind of disorder.
