Hi, I am a new member to Champdogs and have recently been converted to the Barf diet, which so far is a great success. Can anybody tell me,with reference to feeding the whole fruit, for example an orange, do you pulp the skin and the pips as well?
- By tohme Date 13.01.06 16:35 UTC
Hi, I tend to feed my dogs whole fruit unless I am giving them a fruit smoothie for example.

They do not like citrus fruit, but if they DID I would not include the skin, I am not bothered about pips.  My dogs DO like whole bananas including the skins though. go figure.

Please be aware, if you are not already, that grapes are potentially toxic to dogs as are avocados.

tomatoes are great to keep em busy- mums lab likes to burst them and lick/suck the juice out!

 Didn't know about avacados being toxic  Luckily, they haven't done my two any harm so far (but they have only be getting a tiny amount at a time).

My dogs won't eat much fruit voluntarily so I pulp it and mix it in with their food.

Before I visited this forum I didn't know dogs could eat fruit.  She wasn't too impressed with satsumas the first time but she is now :D Pears were not getting eaten by family so gave her one of those the other day and she wasn't sure what it was for at first, but she soon learnt.  Today I gave her a chicken wing for the first time and she sat and looked at me as if I was mad.  She bit into it and when it crunched she dropped it and looked at me again.  She walked off but a little while later I noticed it had gone.  I just hope she has actually eaten it and not hidden it anywhere

Theres a dog food that contains avocados, mine get small amounts of them from time to time & they`ve not done them any harm :)

I've never heard of avocados being a problem either.  Perhaps it is an 'if eaten in excess' issue.

Back in Australia I lived across the road from an Acovado farm and all the neighbourhood dogs would steal avocados off the low hanging branches or off the ground.

None of them ever had any health problems and all lived to about 14 years - these were all larger working dogs too.

However none of the dogs would eat the skin or the seed. So Im guessing that if there is a toxicity its from the skin and seed. As yet I havent found anything online that says the flesh of an avocado is dangerous, and every vet I have ever known has never had a problem with dogs eating avocados...

Then again, it could also be the type of avocado...

Yes it is a bit odd isn`t it L

yep that seems to be the general concensus!  Avocado is high in fat among other things and is great for dogs coats :)

Avocado's being poison is a well worn myth,my dogs love them and always get some when i have one :)

I would have thought someone with a high level of canine nutritional understanding would have known this  ;)

I thought so.

Every dog I have ever met goes mad for avocados and have never been ill.

This whole topic is making me want some avocados, Ive not had any since leaving Australia.
I must get some for me and my dogs :)
- By Christine Date 16.01.06 08:16 UTC
It`s the persin in them thats alleged to be the problem, tho as I said I don`t see how there can be a food with avocados in it

I know mine have had them & other peoples dogs have had them with no problem.............
- By tohme Date 16.01.06 11:04 UTC
Hailey, I am sorry if it appears that my post demonstrates a lack of canine nutritional understanding.

Perhaps if you go to several highly respected sites, the ASPCA poison centre  being one of them, you may find the appropriate facts.  To my knowledge they don't deal in mythology ;)

Just as many people and dogs etc consume/smoke/drink things that are potentially toxic and lead long and healthy lives, others are not quite so lucky.

People have been feeding grapes to their dogs for years and not had any problems either............

Hi

I have started to feed my dogs a raw diet but they get no fruit or veg. is this ok for them. They do not like it. If I have to give it to them how do I prepare it and what is best to start with.

When I first started this type of feeding I was also feeding Natural diet that had veg included. I have stopped this before xmas mainly due to a mix up with ordering it. Would I be better to continue mixing the two to make sure my pair are getting a balanced diet.

I have a GSD and A Jack Russel. They are looking the best they have ever done and for once the big guy has put on weight.

Thankyou

Wendy

Hi there, do not worry, there are lots of dogs who do not eat fruits or veg and in any case f and v should make up no more than 10% of the total diet at most.
- By lumphy [gb] Date 16.01.06 16:32 UTC
Hi

thats good,

Does it make any difference if the Jack Russel is pregnant. Early days I am not sure yet.

If she is should i be avoiding certain foods. I have stopped giving her liver. and should she be getting anything special?

Thank again

Wendy

My 6 month old GSD pup particularly likes apples, bananas and carrots. She also gets a teaspoon of bio-yoghurt every other day. She has also been known to have banana smoothy, cauliflower, and broccoli stalks. I was told that dogs absorb nutrients better from fruit and veg when it has been liquidised, so she now gets a few spoons of my breakfast smoothy every morning, which she loves...!

Lumphy why have you stopped feeding liver? Coz of the A

Nanny ogg you could add a couple of tablespoons of yogurt to your dogs meal every day if you wanted to :)
- By Isabel Date 17.01.06 22:08 UTC
Pregnant woman are advised to not eat liver, vitamin A is thought to be harmful to the developing baby.  I think it is reasonable to avoid the same for dogs.
- By Christine Date 18.01.06 08:45 UTC
Yet pregnant women used to be encouraged to eat liver during pregnancy.
- By lumphy [gb] Date 18.01.06 10:14 UTC
Hi

Re the liver I was feeding it to her as someone said on another list it was good for the babies. Then I looked on the BARF website and it said not to because of the Vitamin A I think it is. I stopped along the lines of better safe than sorry.

She was only getting a small amount about once a week so very easy to stop giving it to her.
