Topic Dog Boards / General / January is a crazy month!
- By gwen [gb] Date 11.01.06 20:24 UTC
I am begining to hate the month of January - Rescue goes crazy!  :(  WE are a very small breed rescue (I mean small in  numbers, not dog size :) ) and in the 3 years since we took over rescue January has been the busiest month by far - and this year looks like it might break the record with 4 dogs being notified to us yesterday.  To put this in context, up to yesterday we had had 49 dogs pass through in 3 years, so 4 in one day is quite something for us.  None of these are pups, and only one is a recent acquisition, so we are not suffering from the post Xmas regret thing.  What on earth makes folk, en-masse, decide to get rid of dogs at this time of year?  Anyone else involved in Rescue noticed this in their own breeds?

bye

Just an idea as to why but is it posibly to do with money, or lack of it after christmas! :(  In today's throw away society do people get rid of what they can no longer afford, starting with pets (ending with computer games :( )

Keep up the good work!  At least these dogs will finally find a forever home! :)

On Granada reports tonight it was showing Manchester dogs home...although they said their numbers were down on past years...they are still over flowing with rescues..makes me very very sad..
But on a different note i know of someone who went to the rspca to try and adopt a boxer which they have in at the moment waiting to be rehomed....this person knows the breed very well and had decided to rescue a boxer rather than have a puppy...and because she has a older boxer..the rspca have refused her enquiry because the poor chap they have in their kennels has shown his teeth once at a inspecter when they first took him in and examined him...now is that fair....she is quite willing to give this dog a good forever home regardless....how sad is that

I was refused a rescue staffie years ago because I had young children !!

(Not because it was a staffie - they will not rehome to anyone with children under 7)

I wonder if it is the spring clean principle?  Having a clear out, and the dog goes too !!! :(  .  We do have a nice waiting list of prospective adopters, but they do not necessarily match up with the dogs at the moment!  One of them is already on to his 3rd home, and is only 18 months old, so sad.

Yes Gwen it is a sad fact :( We have seen this too hence my post on ideas to start to drum some interest up to get even more prospective owners as we have so many Labs 25+ but very few prospective homes at the moment it is madness  Out with the old in with the new for many people :mad:

It's so hard, isn't it?  And as we cover the whole of the UK it is not possible for us to do the Local newpaper thing etc.  We should have a web page up and running soon, and are asking the breed club to let us post details of dogs seeking homes.
Good luck on publicising your bunch - at least we only have 4 so far.  Thank heaven for the free phone call package from BT!

bye

Just want to say a big well done and best wishes to those of you who work for rescue, carry on with the hard work, i work at the vets and in my area there are no rescues- we desperately need one though! My friend who has a good kennel fascility (sp?) is applying to be recoginsed by Kennel Club as a Rescue and we will try hard to help the dogs in our region- plenty of staffs/lurchers/rottie X's/gundogs that arent wanted. Give yourselves a good pat on the back! x
