My friend as a 20 week old pup and he only has one ball at the moment will the other one drop down or is he too old now for it to come down? she wants to show him..

Could still come down until 6 months old or older, don't panic! :-)

is it worth putting him in for open shows??

Might be better to leave it for a couple of months, but as long as you're only going for the fun and not expecting to win big time, I don't see why you shouldn't try one or two for experience (I assume your friend is inexperienced?). He might pull one up out of nerves for a while too, my boy's dad used to do that! :-)

Well, he can't go in for an Open show till he's 6 months old anyway can he??? So maybe it will be down by then?? Fingers crossed! LOL

My boy only has one ball - it never came down, and then it was discovered he was only born with one

To be honest I wouldnt even bother entering open shows, a male dog with one ball is a serious fault and I dont know a judge that would place him.  My boy often gets knocked at companion shows because of this same thing.  If your friend really wanted a show dog, and was sold this dog as a show dog then she really should be speaking to the breeder about returning the pup.  Something I couldnt bring myself to do, I just got another pup - double trouble ;)

Leave it, don't mess about with it!!  He's got to have chance for it to come down and he's still only a baby.  I would get in touch with the breeder and say that there's only one at the moment, then if he does only end up with just one, you've got some back up.

our border collie pup,had one ball then two then one then two,but he is just over 6 months now and they have both been there swinging away for the last few weeks, we left them alone and they came right in the end.

If the dog's 20 weeks old that's nearly 5 months, so if the friend was desperate to show him on the day he was 6 months old he'd have to be entering him about now. But as I've already said, I think it would be better to wait a few months unless they are prepared to do badly until the other one appears! :-)
