Gabi as you all know is agressive to other dogs on lead but fine when not. She seems to prefer smaller dogs than herself and I would dearly love a cavalier king charles spaniel. What do you all think of this combination? I have been offered a 16 month old dog but was wondering if a pup would be easier for Gabi to accept. Any experience of such a combination would be appreciated and any tips on introduction.

Sorry, but for those that don't know, Gabi is a 2 year old GSD bitch.

well if she prefers smaller dogs a cavalier would probably be ok. Why doesnt she like dogs when they are on leads but not when they are on. Is it a frustration thing because she cant play with them.
If you get another dog i would suggest slowely introducing them and thru a gate or screen door and slowely remove or lower a barrier between them.
My girl is an Australian red cattle and i just took in a cavalier and it is like a match made in heaven but my girl has no aggression issues and loves people and dogs. But i was still worried because the cavalier is alot more active then my girl so i thought she might get a little annoyed with the cavaliers constant jumping around but she loves it. The cavalier follows her around constantly my girl loves attention and now she is getting it form me and the cavalier i was worried too but everything went fine.
do you have a friend or know someone with a cavalier that perhaps you could borrow and give it a trial run to see how she reacts to a smaller dog in the home.

If only we knew why Gabi behaves in this way to other dogs on lead. She did not have any bad experiences on lead whilst with us. We did however go on holiday when she was only 4 months old and left her with a lady who breeds GSD's for the police force and we fear that something might have occured then whilst on lead. She hates other GSD's with a vengance. At our local park Gabi has made a friend of a little cairn terrier. It is never with an owner but every day this brave little sole dives over to us without any hesitation. My heart was in my mouth on the first occassion as Gabi was on lead. Gabi was thrilled and played with this little dog very gently, I was amazed. This little thing followed us home and I was very tempted to take it in but the sweet little thing was obviously well cared for so I resisted the temptation. Now every day the same dog comes over for a play in the park. One day I was visiting my daughter who lives only 10 mins. away from me and I saw this dog come out of a house on its own. Just a latch key dog by the looks of things. Maybe next time it follows us home I will let it in the house and see how she reacts.

Personally, I would be very cautious about taking on another dog, unless you feel that you have a complete grasp of both your dog and the problem :)
