Hi again,
Sorry if your all getting fed up with my questions - im just very intriuged. This morning i opened the paper up and saw an advert for some pups - It read " puppies..blah..blah.. Parents have been hip, elbow and eye tested"

Now im really confused i have a cross and hes neutred but im just curious as i thought there was only hip,eye and ear testing?
Im mega confused now - i thought i knew alot but this makes me realise i dont!

Sorry in advance if youve answered this before a million times

Hi Sarah, there are many many health problems that can be tested for. Some health tests amount to a clinical examination, some an x-ray and some can be DNA tested for.

Different breeds have suseptibility to different diseases, cross breeds can be suseptible to the known conditions that affect either or both of the breeds that were crossed.

The elbow screening is another KC/BVA scheme that involves an x-ray, the hearing test is the BAER test, and there is heart testing too. DNA tests are available for a variety of things in alot of breeds, but there are still breeds waiting for breakthroughs in research.

Depending on the breed there are quite a few genetic disorders that can  be tested for

Several types of heart problems for example Mitral Valve Disorder in Cavaliers that leads to heart failure & death sometimes at an early age
Blood clotting disorders like Haemophillia & Von Wilbrands
Neurological disorders like Syringohydromyelia which involves a skull malformation, herniation of the brain from the skull into the spine & a subsequent build up of pressure in the brain & case almost lead to the dog having to be PTS due to the painful episodes they suffer

Unfortunately there are not DNA/clinical tests for everything yet :(
