Topic Dog Boards / General / Poor Cashie!

Poor little whippet had such a horrible experience last Sunday.  It was my work Christmas party so some friends of mine who own a Shiba (Cashie's best friend) looked after him for the night.

What happened was in absolutely no way the fault of my friends.  They took the two dogs to Hampstead Heath on the Sunday morning for a run, and it was freezing cold.  The ponds were iced over and Cashie spotted some ducks walking around on the ice.  Apparently he took off like a shot, but about 15 feet in from the edge the ice became much thinner and he went straight through.  I'm not panicked at all as I only heard about it after the event but he must have had the shock of his life!  Cold and water are probably the two things Cashie hates most and he thought he was going to catch a nice duck!

My poor friend was terrified that he'd get trapped under the ice so she ran into the pond (obviously she's much heavier than a whippet so she wasn't in danger) and dragged him out.  She was soaked up to the neck and I don't know who was more miserable, her or Cashie?

Anyway apart from a couple of grazes he's fine but he'll probably think twice about chasing ducks again.

It must have been a horrible shock for your poor dog - and you hearing about it.  The same happened to our family pet when I was a child but she suffered no ill effects, just became a little wary of icy ponds!
