Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sore area around stitches

Hi
My bitch Akita was spayed last week, she is 10 months old. I took a week off work to be with her and slept on the sofa right next to her, so that I didn't have to put a collar on her,as I had a very bad experience with my cat a few months ago with a collar (she nearly died from it) anyway that's a different story...

She occassionally licked around the stitches, but I told her not to do it too much, which she understood! Today she had her stitches removed and since must have licked the area and it is soooo red and sore - looks like a rash, is this normal??? I feel a fool if I phone the vet again, I have been phoning the last week because she has been so unwell and different since the op.  I don't want to take her back to the vet as she will get upset again!!! unless it gets worse, so I was just wondereing if any one else knows if I should be concerned.

It does sound as if she's been licking it (or maybe the cat has?? ) you could try bathing it with warm salt water (1 teasp salt to a pint of water) and drying the area well, and then try to stop her licking it until some coat has grown back ;) :)

If it doesn't clear up with bathing in salt water then you might need the vet to have a look ;)

Thanks for advise, luckily cats do not go in lounge so wouldn't be them, I bathed it like you said in salt water and it looks alot better this morning - so thankyou for your help.
