Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Could she be in season?
- By waffy [gb] Date 16.12.05 09:27 UTC
My dog Callah, had pups 12 weeks ago and I think she may be coming into season again. Is this possible?
She has not had any discharge yet but she has swelled slightly and my mums entire male has tried to hump my leg twice!
He has also been sniffing me a lot more than usual and sits in front of me whining.
I know that her normal season whether she had had pups or not would be due in January anyway, but is it possible she has started earlier?
I would be very grateful if anyone could let me know as I want to be certain so I can avoid her off lead runs.
Thank you! :)

it is very possible some bitches can have seans 4 months from their last season whether she whelped or not
but i would be making sure it is that because if that isnt her normal season dates then it could be something else needing attention
does the male hump alot anyway
but also its not far from january so maybe it is just the start and she will be ready for mating in the start of jan
so because she only had pups 12 weeks ago you arnt planning on mating her are you im not being judgemental its just been to short of a time in my opinion but id be guessing your asking because you want to make sure she is not near any males right
i would avoid off lead runs even if you arnt sure but id also just take her to the vets just so you can put your mind at rest and if anything is wrong get treatment quickly

Hi Slee,
Thanks for replying :)
No I am definately not going to mate her again,my nerves haven't even recovered from last time yet :o and I dont think I am going to breed again anyway.
As to my mums dog,no he is not a humper ,he only bothers when either my dog or my mums friends dogs are in season or about to come into season.
Callah is fine in herself, eating, drinking and playing as usual but as I said she is swelled but only very slightly .My OH says she isn't and that she just looks normal but then again he's not in the habit of making a point to look at her nether regions,as he so nicely put it.
I will keep her on her lead whilst walking just to be on the safe side and will contact our vet to make an appointment for him to just give her a good look over, but as I said she seems in pefect health.

i know what you mean about the nerves my pups are 4 weeks old today and i am constantly worried they are getting to rough with each other or whether my bitch is ok she has had some problems since her whelp

i would just keep an eye on her and wait and see it is pretty close to jan just about 2 weeks

It is quite possible that she is coming in season a bit early (mine usually are a bit later than normal after a litter), but I would be having the vet check her in case it is an infection.  Dogs will react to infection as they would to a bitch in season.  Though if she is swollen it could be the season, is she showing any colour?

No,no colour yet.I have phoned the vet and have an appointment for monday morning, just to ease my mind really.Though if she shows any signs of being ill at all over the weekend I will take her straight there.
Thank you for your replies. :)
