Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Bathing dog - how often?
- By luvhandles Date 12.12.05 14:36 UTC
Hi.

Just wondered how often it's considered ok to bath a dog? I have a 14 week old CKCS and he gets a bit wiffy about 2 weeks after a bath - is this too often to be bathing him? I use Johnsons baby shampoo and his coat is gorgeous - glossy, soft  and no itching ect.

Thanks

Think it depends on the breed....I have elkhounds and they are bathed 2 x a year.

i have a bull terrier and he is bathed before every show, the reason he loves digging, our border collie about twice a year unless something he has rolled in and i can't stand the stench any longer, but i also think it depends on the breed
you say he smells after about two weeks excatly what type of smell is it a dirty smell or some other type of odour.

It's just a general 'doggy' smell if you know what I mean

In that case I wouldn't bath too often.Bathing removes natural oils which help condition the coat.Dogs smell!! Its something we have to live with...well unless like me you live with a breed that is pretty much odourless :d ...one of the many pleasures of owning an elkhound.I show my elks....about 8-10 champ shows a year and about the same open shows but as I said we only bath a couple of times a year.We find that the dogs coats are pretty much 'self cleaning'.

I wouldn't advice it as often for no reason, but my 10 year old Cavalier is incontinent and before I started using belly bands he REEKED as the pee just leaked out of him whenever he slept, and so we had to bath him 2 or even 3 times a week. Again used babyshampoo, and it was no problem at all. The vet said really the only problem with it was the extra strain on his heart.  Now he gets bathed perhaps twice a month. It's been years and no problems with coat or skin.

I've just given him a wipe over with Johnsons baby wipes and a good brushing - he smells delightful once again so will do this in between baths. He seems to be shedding a lot of hair at the moment, can anyone recommend a good brush/comb.I have a soft bristled puppy brush and a double comb - one side wider toothed than the other but neither grab the loose hair.

Thanks

Are baby products suitable for dogs coats? I would worry about him cleaning himself and ingesting the cleansers off the wipes.
A good grooming aid for removing dead hair is a rake....http://www.hubintsecured.co.uk/acatalog/Rakes_and_Shedders.html   I use an angled rake

What a fantastic site that is archer. Never thought about the chemicals in baby wipes.....pets at home do something similar so will invest in some although I have never seen Harvey lick or groom his coat - only his tinckle!!
