I am fostering a 15 weeks old puppy who is in rescue and the other morning when we got up he had what looked like a red balloon coming out of his bum.  I immediately rang the vet and took his straight there.  They said it was a rectal prolapse and he had to be admitted and the prolapse put back under whilst the puppy was under sedation.  He now has a stitch in his bum.  My question is.......... how likely is it to happen again and has anyone had any experience of this happening to such a young pup?

That is quite young for a dog to have a rectal prolapse. I have worked in the same 1st opinion vets for the past 3yrs on and off and have seen a fair few rectal prolapses...bizarely! The youngest i have seen it in is 1yr old and yes i have seen them re-occur in older dogs but not that frequently.

I'd say it's really young the only experience i've had of a prolapse is when it happened to a sheep in lambing season, she never had stitches she just had this harness thing on holding her woman in until it reattached to the walls.  Hope he's okay, good luck.

warm regards Susan
