Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / choosing dog or bitch
- By guest [de] Date 10.07.01 13:01 UTC
I am doing a special study to complete a canine psycholgy course.
I am looking for any information/ experiences of the ownership of a dog or a bitch
regarding the difference in temperments, possible behaviour problems, has spaying or neutering made any differences, why would you recommend a dog or bitch, etc. Basically any information that you feel is gender related. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone, as the information i have already gathered has been surprising.

Thankyou.

Hi. With my dogs I find that the bitches are affectionate with everyone more or less equally, but more concerned with each other really, but the dogs are more loyal to one person and more "human" orientated. Our male dog is friendly with the whole family but it is my son he adores and gives special affection to. We get a wag first thing in the morning but when he hears my son coming downstairs he goes potty and is very miffed if David doesn't give him quick attention. If he doesn't get the attention he wants quite quickly he will sulk whereas the girls will just keep on pestering til they get their love and fuss. What to do first -make the tea and find a fag or pet the dogs straight away, ugh I hate getting up!! He also stays closer to us when out on walks off the lead wheras the girls just run off and play with each other, he runs off to play too, but comes back to us far more often, on a walk, and looks back often to check we are still there, the girls would be in the next county given half a chance!! He was much easier to house train than any bitch I have ever owned , though this may be just co-incidence, and much easier to train generally. I have not kept that many males, so the difference was quite marked to me, but it could be just his individual character. He is the 3rd male Westie I have kept and the others were very simaliar in temperament to him, they are all quite closely related. Good luck with your studies.

Agree with you again WL, have also found that bitches grow up quicker than dogs, some never seem to grow up at all, come to think of it I know quite a few men like that. LOL
