help. boston terrier will not put on weight. so i changed to JWB. thought it was the best dried food with no additives. it really suited my other dogs but she started to loose weight. want to find a dried food that will help my boston put on weight oh it also caused her to have terrible wind! i am at my wits end and fed up of spending hours reading ingredients on sacks of food.

Hi Little Jayne, sorry to hear about your bad experience with JWB. A great favourite of mine is nature Diet or Arden grange. Both are fantastic foods are free from anything artificial and the dogs love it. If you are concerned about your dogs weight you could try feeding a little more food, maybe break her feeds down into 2-3 small meals per day. Don't want to sound patronizing but you could pop her to the vets just to make sure she's ok and there isn't any underlaying cause for her weight loss. Also is her worming record up to date. Nature Diet do a chicken and tripe variety which is great for buliding up a dog which has maybe lost weight through illness. Obviously you don't want her fat you want her lean and fit. If you view your dog from a birds eye view she should have a definate waist. You should also be able to feel her ribs but not see them. How old is she?? Kind regards, Clare

i took her to the vets she was given a clean bill of health.  the dried food is down all day. she eats well from it have monitored her. her worming is spot up to date.  she is very active being a boston.  is nature diet dried food. she is 11 months old.

Hi Little Jayne, I wouldn't leave the dried food down all day. If any food is left uneaten after 10mins pick it up and fed less the next day. This helps stop dogs becoming picky with their food and stops any food going stale. Glad to hear she has been given a clean bill of health. Narure Diet is a wet food and comes in packets. It is easily available from Pets at Home and good pet shops. The chicken and tripe variety comes in an orange pkt, but they do a whole varity of flavours and types to suit all kinds of dogs needs. As your dog is a small breed she should be fine on the adult variety. Kind reagrds, Clare

I wouldn't leave food all day either.  I think they will eat heartier if they have been allowed to built to an appetite rather than letting it be dulled all day if you follow me.

Jayne,

Boston's should be on the light side - if you cannot see her ribs she is most likely okay.  If you want to feed her dry food, buy any of the "performance" mixes that meet your requirements.  They all have higher calories than the adult or maintenance foods.

BTW, Boston's are known to be windy dogs :-)

I have 4 boston terriers and I free feed them, my food is always down I never pick it up and they are all the ideal weight.... I feed mine Nutro natural choice lamb n' rice my dogs do not over eat, they only get one treat a day and thats it... Boston's I find are gassy dogs :D

They should weigh between 10 and 24 lbs...

I think it all depends what your boston takes more after being the bulldog or the terrier. Tiva takes more after the bulldog and she is pretty bully and Junior takes more after the terrier so is alot more skinnier, their pups T-Bone and Dozer are a lil on the skinny side but not like their dad. Plus my 4 never sit still lol :D always on the go.

You can see my dogs ribs sorta, but you can feel them, my vet says they are a very nice weight. T-Bone weighs 28 lbs but No ounce of fat on her at all, she's kinda long in the legs but that prob because I fixed her too early at just 5 months same with Dozer and they both are that way. Wish I waited :(

Hi Little jayne glad to hear that shes doing well. Fixed means spayed/castrated. Do keep lifting any uneaten food  as this will keep her interested in her meal times!
