Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puffed Jerky - is it what it says it is?
- By Spender Date 09.12.05 21:56 UTC
There's something I've been dying to ask.... it feels a kind of silly but I wondered if anyone has tried this....

I know manufactured dog treats are for dogs but er....well, em, I have to admit to having the odd nibble :-D

But has anyone tasted puffed jerky?  We were having a laugh at Hydro last weekend and we all tried a bit but my friend spat hers out after chewing it for a bit and saying it was cardboard.   I thought it was one of the healthiest treats on the market but I'm not so sure now.  There's like remnants of cardboard or paper left in your mouth after you've eaten it.  And I have accidentally eaten paper many times, especially when eating one of those cornetto ice creams.  Lol

It's put me off giving it to the dogs and I just wondered if there was a logical reason for this due to the ingredients?   I've never tasted dried meat so I can't compare it to that.....

I'm sure that we have bought some beef jerky at our local Sainsbury's and eaten it. It wasn't 'puffed' though and was intended for human consumption :D (Wasn't cheap either)

Ah, there may be human jerky too?  would there be puffed?......It says it's predominately dried meat on the dog version and it might be because I've never eaten dried meat before, that I thought on this occasion it was paper based... maybe I should get some human jerky and compare it?    I was just really curious.....

Edit...I've been looking on another forum and they say it's dried lungs, well I never thought of that...  hope nobodys squeamish.. :-D

From what I remember the jerky we bought was in strips a bit like Schmackos :D I don't think it was dried lung:D Just strips of dried beef :D

Yes, I've eaten it in Africa and there it is just dried strips of beef.  A sort of travel food.  It does take some chewing but there was no residue left.

I've got the puffed jerky,my dogs arent too keen on it,it does remind me of cardboard and it doesnt have much smell. I dont have the guts to try it,but i imagine it would be a tad on the chewy side ;) I think it goes that way after the puffing process, however thats done. But it looks or smells nothing like 'un-puffed' 'normal' jerky.

I've got to admit my dogs absolutely love it.....but even if it was dried lung, which I'm not adverse to at all.... would that still leave a residue like a paper effect?

The puffed doggy version doesn't take much chewing, it's crispy, it was the residue that got me and it doesn't taste like much either to be honest.  It was just a little experiment when I was feeling brave, :-D

Isabel it's called Biltong in Africa.
- By Isabel Date 09.12.05 23:30 UTC
Same stuff though isn't it?
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 09.12.05 23:37 UTC
Mmmmn Not sure Isabel.  I will ask my South African friend next week who has a store of venison hanging in her larder at the moment being converted into Biltong.

Oooh venison biltong, that sounds nice :)

Ewwwwwwwwwwwww!

When very small my children used to eat Go-Cat if they weren't watched carefully but nobody ever fancied dog treats! Biltong is a delicacy in Africa but I rather suspect it is prepared differently to commercial doggy jerky.

Commercial doggy jerky sounds like something else altogether! :) But I think biltong could be pretty much the same as human style jerky as in the Wild West.

Puffed jerky that you buy for dogs is lungs.

The dried jerky or biltong etc is an entirely different thing altogether, and is dried strips of meat of various animals including beef.

Basically if it comes in a plastic bag in the pet department or is sold loose in a pet shop it is lungs, if it comes in a supermarket in th ehuman aisles etc it is the latter.

Paddywack is tendons, deep fried so not terribly healthy, the jerky is ok cos it is just dried not fried.

I have just bought my Bichon some "sea jerky". This is dried fish skins and any dog with a liking for fish will be impressed. Also the dried fish scales supposedly clean the teeth. No additives etc and the company (fish4dogs) also do a sea biscuit that is 95% fish and 5% rice.

Does the puffed doggy jerky make anybody else's dogs sick? Mine regularly have pigs ears, tripe, pizzles etc... but even a small piece makes them puke, even though they eat it enthusiastically.

I LOVE proper, human grade, jerky, but it's way too expensive to buy regularly.
