Topic Dog Boards / Health / ill saluki change vet?
- By ashlee [gb] Date 08.12.05 22:08 UTC
I have posted before about my dog peg, she has been so ill for 4 moths now and I am waiting blood tests for thyroid and platelets which I should get tomorrow, thing is in the last week she has been worse than ever and I went to vets today to ask advice (without dog) to explain that now she is holding her urine, she does pee, but not unless I get her outside and ask her, this is obviously because it is painful for her to squat, as she is so lame and her back legs must be so painfull, all this, and the vet knows but hasn't suggested painkillers and just wants to wait for test results, I have been to the vets 3 times this week, twice to ask advice and once for the bloods, so he can see what state my dogs in,tonite she seemed to be really having trouble and I had to hold her food bowl for her to eat as she couldn't bend down to eat.I thinking of changing vet, I am so unhappy, I can,t bloody sleep over this, would another vet have a completely different point of view? or do we start again? or should I show some patience?

i'd have thought that if she was holding urine, and it was painful for her to wee, that a urinary tract infection, possibly even stones was more likely? My dog had recurrent cystityis for a while, and she behaved like this-as did my friends dog (although her cystitis was far worse-she had bloody urine whereas my girl didn't).

if you're at all concerned about what your vet's saying, i would take her for a second opinion. I've done this in the past, albeit with a cat-turned out the first vet was spouting crap!

thanks, thats what I thought too, but this past week I have diagnosed her with just about everything, the search was endless but at last, and I did show patience, her bloods have shown that she has an underactive thyroid. It seems mad but,Im glad at last we found whats wrong, I dont want anything to be wrong, but at least I know,so that means we can fix it and that its an illness thats fixable.Thank god again for the saluki hound club who told me what to ask for, even the vet was grateful and relieved,so although another vet may have spotted this back in August,in the future my vet will give consideration to this problem if he comes across it again.

So glad you've found out what's wrong with your Saluki, You must be so relieved!  With medication she should soon be her old self, it does take a little while to get the dosage right tho ;) It sounds as if she may have a urine infection as well tho ;)  Hope she's feeling better soon.
