Topic Other Boards / Foo / Anyone know Peterborough??

My son has been offered a position in Peterborough and is seriously thinking of uping sticks and moving there with my two grandsons (and lovely wife too)  so does anyone know Peterborough at all, it is a big move in a strange unknown place.  I started to surf the net with my daughter-in-law but decided it might be quicker to see what any of you guys might know. Like the best schools, the no go areas, the nice places, it would be really helpful if anyone can give some input.  Thanks :-)

The shopping centre is great :D :D :D
And from the few times I have been there it doesnt seem a hugely busy city like Nottingham.
There is ALOT of countryside around. Bourne is only 20 miles away and a rural town, that has alot of new houses going up if he doesnt really want to live in the city.
Not much help as i live 40 miles away and only go for the shopping, but it is worth looking into. Where is he moving from???
lea :)

Thanks for the advice Lea :-) my son would be moving from Dorking, Surrey, so it is not just around the corner for them.  Obviously they will go up there to have a look around, but because of the distance it will only be once or twice, so they will mainly have to rely on the Internet and word of mouth for help. I like the sound of the countryside. My daughter-in-law will like the shopping :-D too!

Peterborough is my nearest big shoppping centre - personally it's too built up for me ( lots of new estates shooting up ) but it is a booming area and is easily commutable for London - only 50 mins by fast train. there seems to be little in the way of crime/social problems and it has had quite a few companies relocating there. The cathedral is lovely and there is loads of countryside all aroundand lots of historical pretty market towns such as Stamford and Bourne We live right out in the sticks near Spalding and would never move back to the south east  now.

However it is fenland country and some people find this kind of landscape just too open and flat for them - i guess he should try a weekend B&B here and explore the area to see if he and his familty would be happy here ( if he likes it in the winter he will LOVE it the rest of the year !!!:D)

Thanks Trevor (Yvonne) that's an excellant idea! (Why didn't I think of that?)  Like the crime and social problem figures, whoops :P everyone might rush there now! :-D

We're in Northampton and Peterborough is our favourite "Day out" shopping city - it has so much character, we love it.

I live about 20 minutes from Peterborough.  The surrounding areas are the nicest.

My favourite areas are actually around Oundle/Elton/Nassington.  Although its on the Northampton border, its really close.  The schools are fab around that area too :)

If you go on
www.upmystreet.com
you will get a good overall view of the area including house prices, council tax, crime figures, school league tables etc. I found it very helpful when moving from Northants to South Lincs ( not too far from Peterborough!).

Thanks guys, I told my daughter-in-law you would all be more than helpful, and you did not let me down. :-)  We shall have a good look at all the suggested area's and upmystreet.com, I've been invited to tag along with them this weekend for a look around.  Wish us luck in finding somewhere. :P

Hi,
We moved from the IOW to Ptboro in 1985 and lived there for 15 yrs. It's a great City with a fab road system. There are lovely old stone villages around and no-where is to far because of the roads. Best places for me to live would be Wansford and surrounding villages. Spalding(on the fen), but my fav would have to be Eye, on the A47 road to Norfolk. It is the only village that I have lived in, that people come to on a Sat night than go out. It's full of life and in easy reach of the city. It's hard to find property though as the peps in the village tend to swop than move out. Give it a look before you leave. I know all the areas and the history, where to eat, what to do, who to see, so send a PM if you want to know more or ask a question. I'm green with envy, I would go back to live there tomorrow.

We are about 14 miles from Peterbrough in the middle between Peterbrough and Kings Lynn, it is cental for most thing as has been said London, not far from the coast, Hunstanton or Skeggness, there is also a very large country park in around Peterbrough center with every thing you could and sailing, wind surfing camping, steam train up to Wansford, hugh lake with pleasure boats, horse riding, cycling and much more just 15 mins from the town center.

We moved down here from the North East 10 years ago and would not go back
