Topic Dog Boards / Health / very worried after a season
- By goat Date 08.12.05 14:58 UTC
Hi all
My dog came into season just before we were due to go away, it was her first season.  She went to the pet sitter who as far as I knew only had one dog at a time. She came into season on 25 October and I was told by the vet that it would last around 3 weeks.  If I could have I would have cancelled our trip but that is another story!!! According to the pet sitter her season finished on 15 November and we picked her up on 1 December.  When we got her home I noticed that her vulva still seemed darker than usual and a little larger and also that her nipples have enlarged and look swollen.  She also seems to be hungry all the time and has started trying to find food (which is all hidden) before we went away she did not do this!
My concern is that when we picked her up the pet sitter mentioned that she had had some other dogs to stay whilst mine was there one of which was an un-neutered male that she had to stay after my dogs season had apparently finished.  I have just phoned her today to find out if she kept them separate etc but I am really really worried.  Could my dog be pregnant or is it normal for the nipples to swell after a season?
Any light that could be shed on this matter would be really appreciated.  I am very very worried.

My young bitch finished her season about a month before yours. She's 1 year old. She has decided to have a (thankfully minor) phantom pregnancy and is swollen, so yes, it's perfectly normal. BUT I think I would have her checked out at the vets if there is a chance that you think she COULD be pregnant. :( Oh, and I would change my dog sitter ;)

Hi
It is ok - I spoke to the dog sitter just now and I feel really bad cause I made a mistake, she did not have the other dog at that time and would never have an un-neutered male there together with her.  I didn't want to doubt the pet sitter for a minute because she is really very wonderful it was just me being paranoid!!!!!.  However I do wonder if it could be a phantom pregnancy how does it manifest itself?
