Last weekend my 22 month old dobe seemed to be a bit smelly - anal glands.  This is the first time this has happened.  I took him to the vet on Sunday and he unblocked the glands - god what a smell.  Anyway since then he has been pretty smelly - well on and off - in the morning he may seem okay, then later on I can smell  him again.  I rang the vet who said to bring him back in.  I just wonder why they are still smelling.  Does anyone know whether this would be normal?

Emptying the glands properly should have left them empty for a considerable time so you would expect the smell (from small amounts of discharge) to have completely gone now but sometimes an infection can be present in the glands causing them to fill again rapidly with fluid so I would definately get him seen again by the vet.
In general, if he is not emptying his glands regularly and effectively without intervention a little more fibre in the diet could be helpful in the future.

My Doberman had ongoing problems with her anal glands, and they did feel up over and over again, although I only remember THAT SMELL at the time the vet unblocked them.  The only symptoms she use to get was chewing on the outside of her leg.  We tried fibre in her diet but nothing ever worked and eventually we just had them removed, and the vet even found a small growth on one of them.  Apparently its a common problem for dobies and they don't really need anal glands, I suppose its a bit like humans with tonsils!!!  I suspect that after a few times of this problem returning your vet may suggest removal.  Hope all goes well, keep me updated.
