Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / can I feed my puppy chappie?
- By dannii [gb] Date 05.12.05 11:58 UTC
I have a 12 week puppy. Which has been on Beta puppy food i'm gradually changing it to burns puppy, as he doesn't like it, but i'd really like him on chappie. I asked the women in the pet shop if theres a chappie puppy food but she was unsure. Just wondered if anyone knew?

Hi, if you don't mind me asking why do you want him on Chappie? :-)   I am almost sure that they don't do a puppy food, I think the Chappie completes are just adult maintenence.

I have tried nearly all the other brands of dog food in the past & I found chappie was the best.Although it's probably one of the cheapest. I'ts been recommended to me by vets & behavioursts in the past. its a fish  protein food therefor makes dogs less hyper & thats what I wan't as he's not going to be used as a working dog. I just wasn't sure if there was a puppy one. I'll ask my vet anyway. thanks Dani

Never heard of puppy chappie food.  As far as I know in all my years, chappie is cheap.  Now that's no bad speak on chappie dog food - as a child our dog and cat ate it and both lived to ripe old ages.  When I got Copper he was fed on chappie and loved it.  Now, however, his palate has got wise to finer things in life :)  I don't know if it's the best thing to feed a pup but if you introduced it gradually to his diet I can't see it would do him any harm.  Maybe check with your vet?

I would wait until he was a year old.   He's in a critical growing phase at the moment and I think Chappie is just a little bit too low in protein, fats etc. for a growing pup.

Ok thanks for your advice. Dani

Personally, I wouldn't feed any dog Chappie - ever since I found a length of knicker elastic in a tin!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want a tip to make him eat the Burns, just put a big dollop of natural yoghurt in the Burns and stir it up.  Most dogs love that.

I recently weaned my pup on to Burn's Canine Extra. He lost a lot of weight & feeding more of it gave him extremely smelly wind & loose stools so I have taken their advice & introduced potato etc on top of his Burn's. He is well in himself but still windy & passing very soft stools at times so I'm not sure it is suiting him really. As for chappie, our other dog has eaten the dried complete for years with no problems at all. He's 13 yr old now & still full of beans. He does get fish/meat/veg as well - dried complete about 2/3rds of his meal. Like others have said, I think if you're dog looks well  - personal choice. I only tried Burn's for the pup as the vet said he needed large breed puppy food & I'd read good reports on here. Just wish the charcoal biscuits were working on that wind!!

bint,

You wouldn't have read any good reports from Burns from me, it made my dogs poo like cow pats!

There are lots of other dog food manufacturer's offering good puppy foods, like Royal Canin, Arden Grange, Nutro, Pro Plan etc.

No I don't think that highly of it either now. But still think chappies the best, but i'll wait til he's bigger. Dani

Mines large breed too & thats why they reccomended it to me. As for the wind I havent noticed as mines constantly  stealing coal out the fire!! ( what a mess). So are you going to give the pup chappie in the future?

bint - In my experience, the dogs which Burns suits, it suits extremely well and they are very healthy and happy on it with no problems.  Some dogs, though, don't respond well to certain elements of it.  Such as that many people find it to be a "lean" food, resulting in the dog losing weight.  I actually know of people who only use Burns after their bitches have had a litter, to get the excess weight off their bitches!

For these people, I'd suggest they try James Wellbeloved.  www.wellbeloved.co.uk  So you might want to think about that and check out their ingredients and foods.

Again, you won't have me saying anything positive about JWB either!

Burns didn't make my dogs thin, it just made their toilet very loose & like cow pats.

Sometimes strips of tripe resemble elastic. ;)

Hi Dannii
may try the pup on chappie when he's older but feed it alongside fish/meat & veg like I do with our other dog.
I did start with pro plan large breed puppy but noticed he was having to eat mountains of the stuff to keep the weight on. Like I said, I weaned him onto Burn's & he lost even more weight. Our trainer said to give him raw meat but I haven't as yet. I'd like to get him onto something that suits him better & hope the wind etc settles down. He will eat absolutely anything - I think that's part of the problem because he often comes in from the garden chewing turf & plants!
I think I worry more about his diet than I did about my son's diet when he was younger.
Good luck
Regards

Thanks. I'll ask my vet where I can get it, as I can't get it in the pet shops. Good luck with the puppy. What breed is he?
