Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Which raw vegetables are ok for a dog?
- By hairyloon [gb] Date 02.12.05 10:05 UTC
Hi,

I'm just wondering which vegetables are ok/not ok to be fed to a dog. My dog currently is on Wafcol chicken twice a day, and I would like to also occasionally give him some vegetables, more as a bit of a treat a couple of times a week because I'm certainly very happy with his complete food.

Would it be ok to give him veg as an occasional addition to his meals?? If so, which ones are best, at the moment, he usually get the odd bit of carrot as a treat if I'm chopping up veggies, but I'm not actually sure what others are ok for him to eat. I know they can have cabbage, but to be honest, if it has the same effect on him as it does on most men (trumps - lol) I'll steer clear. I also know that onions and mushroom shouldn't be fed, but I'm just not sure about any other veg.

Any advice welcome please!!

Thanks

Claire

Any vegetable bar onions is fine to feed dogs provided of course that they like them and they do not cause any ill effects (just the same as any other food, raw or commercial).

Dogs however can only utilise the carbs in veggies if they are either pulped or frozen which breaks down the cell walls.

If you give whole turnips/swedes/carrots to amuse them they will come out the same way they went in.........

Thanks Tohme,

Looks like I'll be digging the food blender out from the back of the cupboard then... I didn't realise about dogs not being able to process the carbs in whole veg, I guess you really do learn something new everyday :)

Don't forget to add water when you "blend" the raw veg otherwise you may get an interesting smell and some smoke arising from the machine

Ooooo i didnt know that. I never add water, so i hope my blender doesnt start smoking!! :D

I doesn't really matter if you are giving a complete diet and want to give the veg just as a treat.  Mine likes carrot and is particularly keen on brocolli and cauliflower stalks, she's so so about mushrooms but the only thing she really hawks and spits out, as though I had tried to poison her :), is lettuce and cucumber.  She seems to really enjoy the crunchy bits and I have to say I have never noticed any of it coming out the other end but then I am only giving thumbnail size pieces as a treat and her dietary needs are being met elsewhere so it wouldn't matter if it did in fact what I am looking for in a treat is enjoyment without calories :)

Some people here feed corn.  :-)

Nothing wrong with that as long as it is not fed on the cob, corn cobs can cause obstructions, life threatening ones.

It is also very high in sugar

Really?  The cob is actually LESS digestable than the corn?  :-)

I have no idea whether or not it is more digestible, all I know is that hundreds of dogs are operated on and/or die due to the consumption of corn on the cob.

Ask a few vets.
