As this is our first puppy for a long time I am not sure of what is normal behaviour.

My little cavalier Flynn is 9 weeks old now and seems to be very nippy most of the time especially first thing in the morning and just before bed time when he has his mad half hour.  Is this normal?  I don't think he is trying to be nasty, he just wants to chew everything. We have tried giving him lots of toys to chew on and when he is biting one of us we give him a chew instead.

Are we doing the right thing?  Can anyone suggest anything else?

Absolutely normal! And welcome to several more weeks of it probably. There is an excellent article on bite inhibition but for the life of me I can't remember the link. Probably been chewed up by the puppy...

Someone will be along with it shortly though, I'm sure.

Yeah, my Cavalier puppy was a mouthy little so and so when she first arrived. I just screamed and ignored her when she did it, and offered her chew toys, and she's ok now (still very licky mind you!) :-)

Thanks that is great to know.  I was worried we were doing something wrong. LOL

Hi. Harvey was exactly the same and still is really,  however, now if I say 'ouch, no biting' firmly when he starts, he mouths really gently, so it does get better.
