I WAS LOOKING FOR A RECOMMENDED BREEDER OF A LONG HAIRED, LARGE ROTTWEILER MALE PUP WITH VIEW OF PURCHASING ONE IN ABOUT 4 - 5 YEARS TIME - CAN ANYONE RECOMMENED A REPUTABLE BREEDER PLEASE ?

No reputable breeder will breed long coated rotties.They occasionally crop up in litters but should never be bred for.

why shouldnt they be bred? do they carry health problems? If the long coated variety is just as much a rottie and just as healthy, why shouldnt people breed them? If it wasnt for people going "against the grain" and breeding white and long haired GSDs then we wouldnt have these variations on the breed today. The Breed Standard is only an ideal and isnt the be all and end all of the breed!
I have seen a couple of long haired rotties and they are beautiful dogs! The rottweiler is supposed to be a working dog and having a longer coat can actually be an advantage if the dog is required to work in cold climates for example herding in remote areas or search and rescue on mountaineous terrain. The majority of people have rotties as a family companion and watchdog, so why should it matter what length their coat is if they are purebred and in excellent health/ You also get red and tan rottweilers and there is nothing wrong with these dogs health wise either. Nature always finds a way to throw some variety into the mix, there must be a good reason for this. :-)

What would be the point of having a breed standard if people don't try to stick to it? Most breeds have enough common conformation defects that crop up without deliberately selecting for them. The type of coat a long haired rottweiller has isn't ideal for working as it's soft, wavy and not waterproof, so is actually a disadvantage. Yes, the long coated rottweillers ARE beautiful and if they occur in good healthy lines, shouldn't have any problems over and above a normal rottie. And I must admit that if I was looking for a rottweiller, a long coated one would fit the bill perfectly for me as a pet. But if you start deliberately breeding for a long coat, you begin to tighten the gene pool and start bringing out any hidden genetic problems (this is how most hereditary diseases crop up).

One of my breeds, shar-pei, have a long coated variety just like the rottweillers. I would actually seek out a 'bearcoat' shar-pei as a companion as I don't think there is a more beautiful looking dog, but I'm totally AGAINST deliberately breeding from them as it is no good for the breed in general in the long run.

Exactly ...long coats rotties are same as the long coat Gsd.Their coats are not waterproof and hence they cannot fulfill their original working purpose.

I agree with Dill though, they shouldnt be sold for a higher price or as "rarities" they should just be sold at the same price as others of their breed. :-) JMHO

If breeders didn't stick to trying to breed to the standard pretty soon the dogs wouldn't look like any particular breed or have the breed temperament/characteristics - in other words the breeds would disappear, just think, no more Bulldogs, Boxers, Dalmations, Bull Terriers etc, just a load of mixed breed dogs and pot luck on type, size, health and temperament.  Is that really what yo would want?  After all with a moniker like 'bulldog bash' I would think you like the bull breeds, but if breeders hadn't developed the bull breeds in the first place you wouldn't have them now ;)
