I seem to read a lot of websites about them quite often being deaf, is this the case?  Or is it overexagerated?  Thanks.

About 8% are totally deaf, with a further 12% being deaf in one ear. Reputable breeders usually have their puppies scientifically tested before sale, and won't sell a totally deaf puppy. Unilaterally deaf dogs (deaf in one ear only) make perfectly acceptable pets.

It's a genetic condition connected to the lack of skin pigment. Many other breeds are also affected, especially predominantly white examples of breeds which are usually coloured.

Is there any breeds of similar size/looks with just a normal plain dark coat or something?  Or just any other breeds to suggest looking at, something as a Pet obviously, not working.

Weimaraner, German Shorthaired Pointer or Pointer.

As I think dalmatians are the best breed in the world, anything else would be second-best! ;) Remember, according to the statistics, 80% of dalmatians have normal hearing in both ears - and the 12% unilaterals are undetectable except by scientific machine. Don't let the risk of deafness put you off the breed as a whole - just make sure you only buy from a reputable breeder - there are many of them!

All breeds (and crosses) can have problems. Eye and hip problems are the most common. You might consider a labrador, German short-haired pointer, Hungarian viszla ... but you'd need to research the conditions they're prone to.
