As any one used stronghold flea protection on there dogs, been told its just as good as frontline what do you think this is once a month treatment
- By peewee [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:17 UTC
Personally I know that Frontline is generally our vetinary surgeries preferred treatment as it gives longer and some would argue better protection but I also know many people who swear by 'over the counter' products (in particular Spot On).  For me it would not only be a case of taking on board the majorities advice but also I'd have to take into account expense - we all know vets charge the earth but on the flip side treatments which require doses more frequently can infact end up costing more!

I don't think that will have answered your question at all but its my first reply as a fully fledged member so I'm quite chuffed with myself :) haha

the sronghold is sold by the vets
- By peewee [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:25 UTC
actually ours use Frontline :)
- By peewee [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:34 UTC
They all use either Stronghold, Advantage or Frontline - its at the vets discretion which one they advocate as everyone has their own opinion
- By chrisjack Date 23.11.05 21:17 UTC
yes i use it, it does the same as frontline, it also does worms too, apart from tape worm. We use it alot in pups and kittens.
- By peewee [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:19 UTC
But it doesn't cover all of the worms that dogs need treating for so a worming treatment is generally still required isn't it?
- By tisha [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:19 UTC
how often do you use stronhold on puppies
- By chrisjack Date 23.11.05 21:26 UTC
basically we look at worming in a practical way, we assess each dog by the lifestyle it leads, ie- a farm dog that goes off eating sheep poo etc will definitley need a all round wormer- drontal/milbemax tablet
but a dog/pup that lives an urban life- ie goes for one walk a day, stays in house otherwise may only need a stronghold or advocate.
We do pups once a month with stronghold till 6 months old, then probably go on to use a all round worm tablet and a frontline or advantage.
Hope this helps....

can you only use stronghold on a pup up to the age of 6 months then or can you use it for longer
- By gwen [gb] Date 23.11.05 21:31 UTC
Hi , I have been using stronghold since it came on the market here, so about 4 years.  The packs recomened using every month, but my vet did some research for me when she first got it in, and said it was only necessary to use it monthly for the control of heartworm.  She recomened using 3 monthly, which I have been doing ever since.  Have not had a flea, itch or ear mite all the while using it, and have only had to use an additional worming treatment on 1 dog ( who was a new addition to the bunch)  I put pups on to it from 12 weeks (USe Panacur and Frontline Spray on before this age) it is also effective against rabbit mit (and, god forbid, mange)  Have had no adverse reactions, either.
bye
Gwen

sorry what do you mean 3 monthly
- By chrisjack Date 23.11.05 21:40 UTC
use every 3 months, so 4 times a year.
- By Paula [gb] Date 27.11.05 18:26 UTC
I've been told to use it monthly!!

It costs about £22 from our vet for 3 vials and with three dogs to be done, it's very expensive!!

Any alternative suggestions would be gratefully received!!

as gwen said you can use it lifelong, depends on dog really, so yes you can carry it on after 6 months as long as that dog isnt gobbling lots of things that can carry tapeworm eggs.
We just like to use it on pups as its an easy 2in1 treatment :)

i have a leaflet about stronghold which says use each month where i have been told frontline is every 8 weeks is this right
- By chrisjack Date 23.11.05 21:57 UTC
yes roughly, again it depends on dogs lifestyle. If you frontline your dog and notice more flea dirt in say6 weeks time, then they will need to be done more frequently,
but by 8 weeks if they have no sign of fleas hold out another 2 weeks and do every 10 weeks?

How old is your doggy?
- By tisha [gb] Date 23.11.05 22:00 UTC
13 weeks
- By chrisjack Date 23.11.05 22:03 UTC
You can either use stronghold, or you could use frontline for fleas and maybe panacur paste/liquid or panacur favourites which are treat types for worms which is very safe :)
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 23.11.05 22:12 UTC
We tend to reccommend frontline down here as stronghold doesn't do ticks, which is a big problem down here in the south. Both work in a differnt way as stronghold goes into the stomach, which is why it kills roundworms, whereas frontline only works its way into the layers of skin. We usually reccommend drontal or milbemax (and occaisionally panacur) every three months for all worms. Both stronghold and frontline spot ons can be used for puppies (over 8 weeks i think, possubly 12 weeks, i'd have to check) provided you have the right dosage for the weight of the pup. Worming needs to be monthly until the pup is 6 months. Frontline is given every month if it is being used for tick control as well as fleas, but for fleas it os every 2 months. Stronghold is reccommended every month.

does anyone no where i can buy frontline on line in the uk
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.11.05 23:06 UTC
In the UK it is a prescription only medicine.  You can buy it from canine chemist and others but yo7u will need a prescription from your vet.  By the time you pay for the vets consultaion you won't save any money.
- By peewee [gb] Date 23.11.05 23:06 UTC
(not sure if allowed to post links so...) I've only managed to find Frontline for sale on the UK's biggest auction site but even then its on import from the t'other side of the world - would probably cost more with the p&p than getting it done at the vets!  vet-medic doesn't sell it but they do other Spot On treatments which you can generally buy from larger pet stores.  So, all in all I think its a no from me at the moment - but I will keep looking!

Is Vet Medic not now selling it freely without prescription looking at this week's Dog World, both Frontline & Stronghold at discounted prices?
- By Val [gb] Date 27.11.05 19:48 UTC
Frontline is still listed as POM at the moment.
- By tisha [gb] Date 27.11.05 23:26 UTC

- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.11.05 09:16 UTC
