Heart block is a disturbance of the heart rhythm. It can only be diagnosed with any certainty, by doing an Electrocardiograph (ECG.)  The waves seen on the ECG are examined and the abnormalities would conform to one or other of the 'blocks'.There are a number of different heart blocks. First degree, second degree, complete heart block, Wenkebach Phenomenon and others. They are all subtly different. Complete heart block would require a pacemaker.
