Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Laws against puppy farmers????

I have just been glancing through the adtrader pet pages and am shocked to see a few businesses selling puppies from about 10 different breeds of dog! The wording is very much like an advert for a business and not a breeder who wants good homes for their pups! How do these people get away with it? They must clearly be puppyfarmers, are there no laws to stop this?

Sadly, not. It's unethical and immoral, but not illegal. :(

As long as they are licensed breeders/puppy traders, whcih some of them actually use in ads as if it is some sort of sign of being a good breeder!
bye

At the beginning of this year, I looked through a certain website everday (just out of curiosity), only to find one man with adverts for 26 different breeds of dogs throughout the month of January. Some were "Pedigree" but with no papers, none were hip scored or health checked (not necessary I was told when I rang the man), and some were cross breeds.
The actual wording of the ads were horrible i.e. first to see will buy (sounded like an ex used-car salesman), can deliver.  Obviously, he was not a dog lover.

Nope they are in the puppy trade or business of breedign and selling dogs, not the same as a breeder that is a custodian of their chosen breed.

Nothing ilegal and never will be as it would be seen as an unfair restrictin on trade.

the latest bill about the breeding and welfare of dogs actually does not allow licensed breedrs to sell pups under 8 weeks, EXCEPT to licensed Pet shops.  How bad is that.  You can guarentee the puppy farmers woudl much rather sell tiny pups wholesale to a dealer than have individual pet buyers scrutinising hter facilities to buy pups over 8 weeks old.  If they do it is likely they will ahve the pusp the dealer didn't want, perhaps defective in some way.

Has this Bill actually come into force yet? About not selling pups under 8 weeks of age to a potential owner.

On another subject, I have found quite by chance that a new website has started up today offering for sale no less than 54 different types of crossbreed dogs, and yes it is a UK site.
I don't think it can be fully up and running yet, as I tried to find out what a "Cheek", also a  "Chalkie" dog was. It said to Log-in, but there was nowhere to do this.  Some of the cross-breed names sounded quite revolting, I'll have to stop looking at these ads as I find them so upsetting. (you can guess what a Boxerdoodle is)

Kind Regards, Sue, Sasha & Heidi

Yes, it's been law since 1991 that licensed breeders can only sell puppies under 8 weeks of age to pet shops or other dealers.
Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act.
