My 5 year old male neutered English Setter is losing claws, he has broken/torn 6 claws (three of which the vet has had to remove). Vet cannot figure out what is wrong, may be fungal but the antifungal treatment is not working, vet says he will surely lose all his claws! Vet sent a sample of infected area to lab for analysis but no response yet and she says because there are so many bacteria, microbes and fungi in the woods the culture may either not grow anything or grow so many things that it will be impossible to identify the offending agent. He eats, drinks and eliminates normally. Antibiotic treatment did not work either. Any suggestions or information would be most welcome!!!!
Hi, I have ES and have not heard of this happening with an English before. I am a vet nurse and we had a GSD in last year who lost all his nails due to a fungal infection. Again he tried lots of different antibiotics and nothing seemed to help him. The main problem then was making sure there was no infection present in the remaining nail beds. Does your ES have any other skin problems?
