I have a 6mth old shih tzu who I have noticed today is in season, her vulva is swollen and there is the discharge. Now I know to keep her away from male dogs for at least 28 days but my question is, for these 28 days will there be a discharge?

It varies for how long the discharge last, it's amount and whether it is bloody all the time.

Generally you know the season is finished when the vulva returns to a normal closed state. 

The average season lasts 21 days but bitches can be mated and conceive anything up to several dats later hence it is best t6o avoid any contact with male dogs for  the extra week.
