I wondered what peoples views are on changing a dogs name?
We are rehoming a bitch pup this week whom is nearly two years of age.We already have a dog who answers to anything you call him LOL but obviously he knows his name so i thought it would be possible to change hers if i kept it sounding very similar.Any suggestions would be appreiciated too.Her current name is Brandy.

What about Bindy? We didn't change our rescue dog's name (Kevin!!) but once he got to know us he would come without using his name so maybe she won't get too confused, bless her.

I got my American Cocker Spaniel at the age of 2. His name was Peter, I changed it to Beano. And he came when I called within 24 hours. So I wouldnt worry and change it if you want to :)

My dog's name is Paris, one of my children calls her Pookie, one of the other children calls her Pal or Mike or Myster  and my dog responds to all of them so I wouldn't worry either, call her what you like :)

edited to say - I just remembered she also responds to "where's that dog?" :D

I wouldn't worry too much. Mine answers to "Limb of Satan" as well as "Nipper". When I inherited a 6 year old cocker called Bobby we abbreviated it immediately to Bob and he never noticed the difference. Brandy is quite a nice name though.

I would change her name to whatever you want to - she'll answer to it within a very short time. I acquired a chow who was a year old and came with the name of smokey which didn't suit him. I renamed him Taz which he learned in about 2 days and he wouldn't even answer to Smokey after that.

Our Battersea dog was a stray so no-one knew his name. They had called him Anakin Skywalker which we didn't feel quite suited him :D :D :D He couldn't care less what we called him - all he wanted was a loving home :D

I got a bitch back that was called Susie. My neighbours daughter was called Susie, so we changed the dogs name, to Krishna! She very quickly learnt her new name (even when she got called Squish - she liked to flatten you when she sat on you!) Sometimes it's better to give a completely different name, expecially if it has come from a bad experience, where it's name usually meant a hiding :( Dogs adapt very quickly :)

All mine answer to each others names too. lol and anything else you say.! its all in the voice - your voice - and the way you'll talk to her.  [but all my dogs names end in 'a' so they are similar making it easier]
