Topic Dog Boards / General / New pups arrival

Hi all.

Well the new pup came last night and all went well. Our older one, Cassy was great she just kept smelling and licking him. Our son was fine too. After 20mins he was back to watching TV and paying no attention to the pup.

However this morning Cassy has been a bit snappy toward the new pup (who's name is Clay). Espeicially when it comes to them both wanting to play with the same toy!
She hasn't actually done anything but give little growls.

Is this normal? What should I do when she does growl? Tell her off? Or reasure her and give her hugs?

Any advice?

Many thanks.

Michael.

Don't tell her off she's teaching him his place & unless she was to actually attack him & mean it you should do nothing. Bitches are usually better with puppies than dogs & it sounds like she's made a good start

Hi,

Im glad things went well with the introduction :) just ignore her if she growls at him - she is just showing him that she's the boss. He might try and push it to see what he can get away with but she will let him know the boundaries - thats how puppies learn. I wouldnt worry about it at all - in my experience it is perfectly normal. Enjoy your new puppy :)

Hi Michael,

It sounds very normal to me too :)  Bitches IME treat new pups pretty good manners right from the off and are patient when they need to be - whereas adult males are usually scared witless by little squeaky things that try and nip them or constantly try and cajole them into play  :P

Cassy sounds as if she'll be absolutely fine with Clay - just remain observant in case he really pushes the boundaries with her and actually annoys her but it's really best not to intervene if Cassy continues to behave as she has done so far.

Best wishes, Teri :)

Thanks all.
We are a lot more relaxed now we know Cassy's behaviour is normal!
Clay is becoming more confordent now also. He is starting to chase Cassy around the garden, it's great to watch.

Thanks again.
