my lab bitch had 8 puppies 4 weeks ago but last night she was sick just the once and today she seems depressed she just lay near the pups crate but does not want to go in with them she does not want to mix with my other dogs or come and lay in the living room do they get post natal depression ?

Have you checked her mammary glands?  She could be starting mastitis which can make her feel very ill, or it could be a womb infection.   Best to get her checked by a vet and eliminate the possiblity of an infection, safer for her and the pups ;) 

I wouldn't have thought post natal depression would cause sickness ;) and never heard of it in a bitch;)

her mammary glands are all fine she has no tempature and no discharge I am going to let her sleep tonight without her pups and see how she is in the morning if she is still the same then I will take her to the vets all puppies are ok and I did worm her and pups again today in case it was worms

Hi Handyman, i agree totally with Dill, and if she's been a good mother up until now, i'd suppect there's something wrong with her and i doubt it's got anything to do with worms.  Best to get her to the vets asap.  Good luck with her.

No discharge doesn't mean no infection :(  have you checked the mammaries under her front legs, these are easy to miss as they often aren't used but they can get full and infected ;)

At four weeks your girl would be producing milk at the maximum amount, for her puppies. Have you thought about eclampsia? This is a very serious condition, which has to be treated by a veterinarian, or you could loose your bitch. It's due to hypocalcemia.  Eclampsia in it's early stages can give very vague symptoms. If in doubt, contact your vet, better once too much in cases like this. Good luck, hope your girl is feeling better today, and is back to her normal self.

hi thanks for all yoyur replies last night I kept her away from her puppies and today she is back to her normal happy self feeding the pups and eating well she must have just had a off day or just very tired
