Hi,
Sorry about the title did not know which way to word it???
My Staffy bandit is 3, and he has never cleaned his own bits, it gets a pus like liquid coming out of it on occasions, it does not seem to be sore and is never red or inflammed, I have to clean it for him. I contacted my vet he said it was because of his age and quite normal and would go away in time? Why does he not clean it himself, my other dog is always cleaning himself. Is it anything to worry about.
Thanks
sheli

Sheli - nothing to worry about at all. You know, if he's a little chunker of a staffie, he may just not be able to reach to clean himself! I had a chow that couldn't and my friend has a Westie who can't. Baby wipes are ideal to have on hand as a quick, disposable clean up for doggies.
The creamy white/yellow pus like substance is perfectly normal and you're only noticing it because he's not cleaning himself. It goes by the delightful name of 'smegma'. If the discharge is green or darker yellow or there's a lot of it, he may have an infection that needs treatment. But if the vet's checked him out and given him the all clear, don't worry.
Thanks for replying pheobe, he is a chunky little lad, I will keep an eye on it for it changing colour.
smegma, name says it all dont it lol

Lol, copper has this all the time and the vet assured me it was perfectly normal in male dogs - and he does clean himself regularly. It does stain the carpet though - yuk!

God, my lad is just the opposite he never leaves his bits alone, I always tell him that he's like a typcial male :d

LOL@perrodeagua :P My boys the same, having a permanent romance with it!
I've got the opposite problem though, my 10 month old bitch doesn't go near her nether regions and looks quite disgusted when I have a little wipe around the area, as I keep telling her, someones got to do it!

I always assumed it was just a bit of overflow from being a young male!! :-D

So thats where smeg came from. Puzzled over that for years, my boys just laugh at me, their dad is scouse so he used to say it even before Red Dwarf!

Which is why I'll never,
ever buy one of those fridges!

I really couldn't bear to look at that word emblazoned on the door, knowing what it means, and then handle food!

:D :D
